Presbytery of Giddings-Lovejoy
Transitional Leader

Happy New Year!
In 2018 I invite, entreat, encourage, and request that each person in the presbytery step outside of their congregational box and get involved in an event, meeting, gathering, or worship service at the presbytery, synod, or national level. The opportunities are numerous, and the experience will change your thoughts and hearts about the health of our presbytery, and denomination. Please continue here.

Host our History - Presbytery Wide
As the presbytery staff prepares to move into a smaller space, we must look at locations willing to host and care for historical items that are treasures of our presbytery. These items vary from communion sets to bound books; statuettes to stoneware; pictures to photographs. Can your church be in care of these precious gems? If you are willing to host items, we need to hear from you soon! Please email [email protected] to discuss what you might be interested in preserving for our presbytery.

Remembering/Reaffirming Baptism

January is the month many congregations include a Reaffirmation of Baptism liturgy as they celebrate Jesus' baptism. Sometimes the scallop shell, a Christian symbol of baptism, is used. Scallop shells are placed in water in the baptismal font or a separate clear bowl, and congregants are invited to take a scallop shell as a symbol of reaffirming their baptisms. If a congregation is interested in using scallop shells (free, collected from the Florida coast, cleaned and polished) for such an occasion, please contact Rev. Ellie Stock at [email protected] or (314) 521-8418.
Silent Movie Shorts

Brighten your winter afternoon Sunday, January 7, 4:00 p.m. at Second Presbyterian, with this hour-long collection of silent movie shorts. Andrew Peters improvises live organ accompaniment on the church’s Schantz Organ to match the action and plot of the different films. The set of comedies concludes with Laurel and Hardy’s “Big Business” where they attempt to sell Christmas trees door to door in July.
The movie, part of the Couts Music Series, is free and open to all. For more information call 314-367-0367 or www.secondchurch.net. Or directions can be found here.

Historical Highlight - Mizpah Presbyterian
Mizpah Presbyterian Church was established in 1840 when twelve people met and organized a Presbyterian church. They submitted a petition and were accepted by the Presbytery of St. Louis, officially welcomed to the Presbyterian family on April16, 1843, as Fee Fee Presbyterian Church. Fee Fee Baptist’s congregation invited Mizpah to share its small brick meeting house deeded to them in 1815 for a church and cemetery (now the corner of Fee Fee Road and Old St. Charles Rock Road). This structure still stands and is used as the cemetery caretaker’s residence. In 1869, the Presbyterian congregation acquired land at the northeast corner of Fee Fee and St. Charles Rock Roads and built the current church.
