Sharlot Hall Museum Lecture Series: "Prostitution in Prescott 1864-1930"

Historian, author, and Sharlot Hall Museum Store Manager Jan MacKell Collins provides this latest in a series of lectures pertaining to the history of Prescott and the surrounding area on January 6 at 2:00 pm at the Sharlot Hall Museum (415 W. Gurley St.).

Like it or not, the prostitution industry played an important economic, political and sociological role in the frontier West. Jan MacKell Collins, author of two books on prostitution history in the western states, will present a look at the sex trade in Arizona and particularly in Prescott.

Details of the women who plied their trade, as well as the hypocrisies displayed by government and local officials, will be discussed.

Prescott Film Festival Monthly Series
Prescott Film Festival

The Prescott Film Festival Monthly Series screens "Shouting Secrets" at the Yavapai College Performing Arts Center (1100 E. Sheldon St.) on January 9 at 6:30 pm. Tickets are just $5.

This movie is about a Native American family returning home during the chaotic event of a parent's sudden illness. Director/Producer Korinna Sehringer will be at the screening and have a Q&A after the film. On January 8, from 4:00 to 5:30 pm, she will be doing a Film Discussion at the Prescott Public Library and that event is free and open to the public. 
Winter Walks: Connecting with Nature During the Silent Season


Meeting on January 12 and 26 at the Highlands Center for Natural History (1375 S. Walker Rd.), these outings will consist of a 2-mile walk. Bird activity, trees, animal tracks, clouds and anything else that comes up is fair game as participants attempt to find patterns and relationships in what they observe.

What to bring: warm clothes, snack/lunch, water, binoculars (extras will be available) and field guides. Join local birdwatcher/naturalist Zach Smith at the Highlands Center for a unique exploration of birds in winter, their voices, behaviors and how we can walk a little softer to enhance our (and the birds') experience. Admission is free!
Tom Chapin in Concert 
 
A highly respected contemporary folk artist, Tom Chapin has established a reputation for insightful, heartfelt songcraft and effortlessly charismatic live performances.

Arts & Heritage Conversations at the Phippen 
Phippen Museum of Western Art

The Phippen Museum of Western Art (4701 Hwy. 89 North) hosts three Conversations in January, relating to the theme of the Musem's main gallery exhibition "Through Navajo Eyes" (running through February 17).

The first Conversation on January 12 at 1:00 pm is ""A Critical Eye on Navajo Art" with Corinne Cain, ASA" wherein internationally respected art appraiser Corinne Cain discusses the artists and art works featured in the Phippen Museum exhibit, "Through Navajo Eyes."

The second is "Living among the Navajo" with Mrs. Fern Cole on January 19 at 1:00 pm. Join Mrs. Cole as she reflects on the 25 years she spent living among the Navajo people as a pastor's wife.

The third Conversation is "The Beauty of the Navajo Language" with Evangeline Yazzie, PhD on January 26 at 1:00 pm. The Navajo language is the heartbeat of the Navajo nation and keeps the culture alive. Discover the beauty of the Navajo language as Dr. Yazzie demonstrates how culture and language are inseparable. 
4th Friday Art Walk
 
On the 4th Friday of each month, more than a dozen participating Prescott galleries keep their doors open to visitors and local alike for a night of fun, food, music and ART!

Ron White: "A Little Unprofessional"

Comedian Ron "Tater Salad" White is best known as the cigar-smoking, scotch-drinking funnyman from the "Blue Collar Comedy" phenomenon. White has always been a classic storyteller. His routines relay tales from his real life; ranging from growing up in a small town in Texas to joining the ranks of some of the most successful comedians in America.

He is a certified platinum-selling artist: having sold over 10 million #1 albums, has been nominated for two Grammys and he continues to be one of the top five grossing comedians on tour.

After gaining momentum with his standup, White was asked to join Jeff Foxworthy, Bill Engvall and Larry the Cable Guy on the "Blue Collar Comedy Tour," in 2000. The tour played to sold-out audiences in over 90 cities.

This show is for mature audiences, 18 & over only.

Mary Chase's Pulitzer Prize-winner tells the enduring story of the eccentric Elwood P. Dowd and his 6 foot tall invisible rabbit companion Harvey. As they tipple from tavern to tavern, they become instant friends with everyone they meet.

But after Elwood introduces Harvey to his sister Veta's society friends, she and her daughter Myrtle Mae decide to have Elwood committed to the local sanitarium where mistaken identity leads to a comically improper diagnosis and hilarious consequences. In the play's climactic scene, Veta--and all of us--will be asking ourselves whether "normal" is all it's cracked up to be.

"Arizona's Son: The Photography of Barry Goldwater" 








January 12 - April 28

Arizona Senator Barry M. Goldwater - politician, ham radio operator, western art collector, aviator, and master photographer. His interest in the people and places of Arizona ran deep and he decided to build his own historical record of the state.

He carried a camera with him everywhere he went and it became an extension of Goldwater himself. Over the next thirty years, during his travels of his home state, the United States, and the world, he took 15,000 photographs and over 25 miles of film.    

Instructed by local photographer Tom Bate, inspired by Edward Weston and Ansel Adams, Goldwater developed a talent for photography that would be recognized worldwide.

Kris Kristofferson is an American original, with hits like "Me and Bobby McGee", "Sunday Mornin' Comin' Down", and "Help Me Make It Through the Night".

Touring on his latest album, Closer to the Bone, Kristofferson says "Something was making a direct communication with the audience, and I guess it must be down to the essence of the songs. Because God knows, there's better guitar players and singers. But it seems to be working with my material - just me and the song."

Blues & Soul Explosion - A Salute to The Blues Brothers
