CITY OF WESTLAND

STREETLIGHT CONVERSION TO LED LIGHTS CONTINUES

Westland, MI - Using Metro Act Funds and a DTE Energy Optimization Rebate, Westland City Council has approved the conversion of 230 mercury vapor streetlights along ten major roadways including Joy, Newburgh, Van Born, Merriman and Middlebelt Roads.  Total cost of the LED conversion is $101,190 with the City's costs to be $69,000.  This conversion to the more energy efficient LED lighting represents Phase II of the City's continued investment in LED streetlights that began along Wayne Road between Glenwood and Parkgrove Streets.

Estimated to save the City almost $39,000 in annual utility costs, the Phase II LED streetlights are expected to pay for themselves in less than two years with reduced lighting costs.  "As a city dedicated to responsible environmental stewardship, Westland is thrilled to be able to improve upon the safety of motorists and pedestrians who use these thoroughfares with LED streetlights that use less energy yet provide for enhanced visibility;" commented Mayor William R. Wild.  "Current yearly energy costs for these streetlights total over $93,000; the LED lights are expected to result in a reduced annual energy cost of $55,000."

Eventually, the City seeks to convert the remaining 2,300 mercury vapor streetlights in the City to LED lights.  The Phase II conversion to LED streetlights is anticipated to take six months to complete.
