Mayor William R. Wild Announces Several Appointments to Westland Boards and Commissions
Westland, MI -  Mayor Wild has continued to appoint new members to serve on Westland's Boards and Commissions along with a number of re-appointments that have also been confirmed.  

Roger Shifflett has been appointed to serve on the Building Authority to fill an unexpired term.  Shifflett is currently the Deputy Director of Westland's Community Development/Housing Department.  He also worked for Wayne County's Community Development from 2012 to 2017 as a project manager in charge of construction projects.



The Building Authority is a three member board that is appointed by the Mayor and confirmed by City Council.  The Building Authority issues bonds to pay for construction of municipal buildings.

Daniel Stachow has been appointed to serve as an alternate on the Board of Review for a three year term, which will expire March 5, 2021.  Stachow has been a Westland resident for 38 years and is the President of the Wayne-Westland Veterans Parade Council.  He is a Veteran and retired from General Motors after 44 years of employment.  



The Westland Board of Review reviews the annual assessment roll and hears appeals of real and personal property assessments. The board also corrects "clerical errors, mutual mistakes of fact, and homestead status" relative to the current and prior year's assessment rolls.

Councilman Michael Londeau has been appointed to the Youth Assistance Advisory Council.  Londeau was recently elected to the Westland City Council and formerly served as the Chairman of the Downtown Development Authority.  He is a lifelong resident of the City of Westland.



The Youth Assistance Advisory Council is apprised of the development, implementation, and evaluation of program services. Board members draw from their individual experience and expertise to provide suggestion and feedback regarding the direction of the program. 

Debra Fowlkes has been reappointed to serve on the  Planning Commission for a two year term that will expire on February 18, 2020.  Fowlkes has served on the Planning Commission since May 2015 and also previously served on the Police and Fire Civil Service Commission.  She is also a former President of the Wayne- Westland Community Schools Board of Education.



The Planning Commission consists of nine members who are appointed by the Mayor and confirmed by City Council.  The Commission reviews site plan approvals, special land use requests, rezoning requests, land division requests, mechanical amusement licenses, street and alley vacations, and more.

Three members of the Commission on Aging have been reappointed. 

John Ericson will serve a four year term that will expire on February 22, 2022.  Ericson and his wife Mina have been married for 50 years and have spent the last 25 years as Westland residents.  Ericson has been an active member of Westland's Friendship Center for more than a decade and has served on the Commission on Aging since 2011.



Francine Harper will serve a two year term that will expire on October 1, 2019.  Harper was appointed to the Commission on Aging in 2015 and has been an active member of the Friendship Center for more than 10 years.  She is actively committed to healthy living and has filmed multiple healthy cooking shows on Westland's cable station WLND.



Diana Raymor will serve a two year team that will expire on January 6, 2020.  Raymor was appointed to the Commission in 2016 and has been an active member of the Friendship Center for more than 20 years.  She is a lifelong Westland resident and has experience as a care-giver that has equipped her with knowledge and understanding that is valuable to others who visit the Friendship Center.  
 

The Commission on Aging is an eleven member board appointed by the Mayor.  The Commission meets every other month to discuss issues relevant to the older adult population in Westland. The Commission meets with Senior Resource Director on a regular basis and often collaborates on various issues and topics of concern. The Commissioners vary in age, backgrounds and represent citizens 50 and over from different areas of the city. A wide range of topics are discussed in meetings along with problems and solutions for older adults. Many of the Commissioners are active members of the community and/or the Friendship Center.

Two members of the Disabilities Concerns Committee have also had their reappointments confirmed.  

Anthony Ferack was appointed to the Disability Concerns Committee in 2013.  He has lived in Westland for 35 years and is a member of the Hearing Loss Association of America.  He is also a certified peer mentor at Gallaudet University in Washington D.C.  Fereck will serve a three year term, set to expire on January 3, 2021.



Don Nicholson has also been reappointed to a three year term that will expire on October 6, 2020.  Nicholson has lived in Westland for a combined total for 43 years.  He is the owner on Don Nicholson Enterprises, LLC. which was provided services to the Wayne-Westland communities for 25 years.  Nicholson has served on the committee since 2014 and has a personal connection to those with disabilities as his son is Autistic.  


The Committee on Disability Concerns is committed to the research, education, encouragement, and promotion of community involvement in the acknowledgement of the needs and concerns of disabled citizens. The board currently has seven members who are appointed by the Mayor, two of which have disabilities covered by the ADA.
