This Week in Westland 
 January 13, 2018 - January 21, 2018
Annual Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Celebration - Huel Perkins, lead anchor at Fox 2 News Detroit, will deliver the  Keynote Address at the City of Westland's annual Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Ceremony on Monday, January 15.  Participants are asked to gather at Westland City Hall, located at 36300 Warren Rd. beginning at 8:30 a.m.   From there, participants will be shuttled to the Westland Public Library for the Freedom Walk, which will begin at 9 a.m.  The Freedom Walk will symbolize all of those who marched with Dr. King over 50 years ago.  The short walk will end at Westland City Hall. City Hall doors will open beginning at 8:00 am. The  ceremony, which begins at 10:00 a.m. will include uplifting messages from Mayor Wild and other state and local elected officials.  Light refreshments will be provided by the Westland Police Community Partnership Committee.

City Offices Closed in Observance of MLK Day - On  Monday, January 15 all City Offices will be closed in observance of MLK Day.  This includes the 18th District Court and the Westland Public Library.  Trash and recycling pick up will not be affected by the closure.  

Holiday Open Skate - Since schools are closed for MLK Day, the Mike Modano Ice Arena is hosting a holiday open skate on Monday, January 15 from 1:00 p.m. to 3:00 p.m.  The cost is $4 for kids and $5 for adults with a $3 charge for skate rental.  The Mike Modano Ice Arena is located at 6210 Wildwood.  


Scheduled Upcoming Civic Meetings - Residents are invited to attend the upcoming City meetings.  Below is a list of the meetings with their date, time and location:

Disability Concerns
  • The Disability Concerns Committee will meet on Tuesday, January 16 at 5:30 p.m. at Westland City Hall, located at 36300 Warren Rd.
City Council
  • The Westland City Council meeting will take place on Tuesday, January 16 at 7:00 p.m. at Westland City Hall, located at 36300 Warren Rd.
Zoning Board of Appeals
  • The ZBA meeting will take place on Wednesday, January 17 at 5:30 p.m. at Westland City Hall, located at 36300 Warren Rd.  
Blood Pressure Screening - Westland's Senior Resources Department is offering free blood pressure screening on Thursday, January 18 from 10:00 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. at the Westland Friendship Center located at 1119 Newburgh Rd.  

Craft and Chill -  Have you ever wanted to learn to paint? Now's your chance! Join us on Saturday, January 20 as we bring Craft & Chill Painting to Westland Historic Village for the first time.  Attendees will have all supplies provided as the group learns to paint.  The event takes place from 1:00 p.m. to 3:00 p.m. at 857 N. Wayne Rd.  Tickets are $40 and you can purchase them at https://www.eventbrite.com/e/craft-chill-painting-tickets-39153803079 .  Proceeds from the event benefit the Westland Historic Village Park.
