Healthcare Marketplace Open Enrollment Event - Do you need affordable health insurance but are confused about the enrollment process?  You can get answers to all of your questions on Saturday, January 9 from 10:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. at the Jefferson Barns Community Vitality Center, located at 32150 Dorsey.  The Health Insurance Marketplace is a new way to find coverage that fits your budget and meets your needs.  Whether you are uninsured, or just want to explore your chjoices, the Marketplace will help find coverage that's right for you. MSU Extension Nutrition Class - Michigan State University Extension Nutrition Program offers free classes that teach healthy eating and cooking techniques at the Jefferson Barns Community Vitality Center.  These classes will run for six consecutive weeks.  The first class is on Monday, January 11 at 11:00 a.m.  This is an opportunity to be active and healthy with this fun, interactive cooking course from Michigan State.  The JBCVC is located at 32150 Dorsey.

Mornings with the Mayor on the Road -  Mayor William R. Wild is taking his monthly "Mornings with the Mayor" on the road in 2016.  Mornings with the Mayor began in 2015 as another avenue for residents to connect with Mayor Wild and his administration about matters of  importance regarding City services or programs and events.  These monthly meetings have been a hit with residents who enjoy interacting with the Mayor and key department heads and are often privy to the latest breaking news in the city.  The first of the "Mornings with the Mayor on the Road" series will be held at the William P. Faust Westland Public Library and will take place on Tuesday, January 12 at 9:00 a.m.  Coffee and water are provided during this one hour event.  The library is located at 6123 Central City Parkway.

Grindstone Smokehouse Ribbon Cutting - On Wednesday, January 13, we will be cutting the ribbon on yet another new business in our All American City.  The Grindstone Smokehouse, formerly Beaver Creek, is ready to welcome customers to come and enjoy their menu of smoked favorites like ribs, chicken and brisket.  They also have nearly 20 different drinks on tap from domestics to your favorite IPAs.  Grindstone is located at 1609 N. Wayne Road and the ribbon cutting will begin at 4:00 p.m.

Open Mic Night -  On Thursday, January 14 Open Mic Night returns to the Westland Library.  This free event provides a venue for local writers, poets, singers, rappers and performers of all kinds to share their talents and hone their craft.  Anyone is welcome to step up and entertain the room for up to five minutes with their family-friendly work.  There is no need to register or sign up.  Just simply show up that evening and the host, singer-songwriter Dave Boulette, will make sure you get an opportunity to perform.  The show begins at 7:00 p.m. in Meeting Room B of the Westland Library.


Zumba Fitness at the Library - O n Friday, January 15 you can join in the very popular Zumba Fitness program.  For one hour, starting at 11:15 a.m., you will be dancing to Latin rhythms with easy-to-follow moves led by a certified instructor.  This free class is open to adults and teens and you don't need any dance experience to have a great time and get an excellent workout.  This class happens every week at the same time in the meeting rooms of the Library.
  
Friday Night Glow Skate -  The Mike Modano Ice Arena has re-opened for the season and Friday Night Glow Skate is back.  Glow skate will run every Friday from 7 p.m. to 9:20 p.m. and will cost $8 for kids and $9 for adults for residents.  The cost is 50 cents more for non-resident.  One glow in the dark accessory will be given will the purchase of admittance to glow skate.  The Ice Arena is located at 6210 Wildwood.

City Offices Closed in Observance of Martin Luther King, Jr. Day - All city offices will be closed on Monday, January 18 in observance of Martin Luther King, Jr. Day.  This includes the William P. Faust Westland Public Library and the 18th District Court.  Trash and recycling pick-up will not be affected.  City buildings will re-open at their regular time on Tuesday, January 19.

Martin Luther King, Jr. Day Prayer Breakfast and Freedom Walk - You don't want to miss out on this year's special Martin Luther King, Jr. Day Celebration.  The event will be held on Monday, January 18 and will begin with a freedom walk from John Glen High School at 36105 Marquette to the Friendship Center at 9:00 a.m.  The Friendship Center is located at 1119 Newburgh Rd.   Attendees can park  at John Glenn High School when we gather there at 9:00 a.m.  At that time, the Freedom Walk will begin to symbolize all of those who marched with Dr. King over 50 years ago. The walk will end at the Friendship Center and continuous shuttles will be available to return you to your vehicle.   Although city offices will be closed in recognition of the holiday, The Friendship Center's doors will open at 9:00 a.m. for the prayer breakfast and ceremony which begins at at 10:00 am. The prayer breakfast is being funded by the Westland Police Community Partnership.   Mildred Gaddis, one of Detroit's trusted and respected journalists and award-winning news/talk show host, will deliver the keynote address at this year's Martin Luther King, Jr. Day Ceremony in Westland.   We welcome you to join us as our community pauses to celebrate the life and legacy of this incredible man.
