City of Westland Celebrates 50th Milestone 
Westland, MI --  The City of Westland is celebrating its 50th Anniversary this year and is inviting residents to take part in the festivities.  

If you are a Westland resident or business who is celebrating a 50th Milestone this year (birthday, anniversary, reunion etc...) we want to know about it!  Please go to http://www.cityofwestland.com/play/celebrating-50-years and complete the form so we can give you a shout out and include you in the fun.

Do you have a favorite Westland landmark or location?  Take a selfie in front of it to show your #WestlandPride.  You can mail the photo to [email protected] or post it on Twitter with the #WestlandPride and we will include you in our 50th anniversary commemorative video.

There is a slate of festivities scheduled for the summer to celebrate this important milestone for the city, and it all kicks off on Monday, May 16 with a special day-long Homecoming Celebration at Westland City Hall, located at 36300 Warren Rd.  The Homecoming will kick off at 11 a.m. with the opening of the time capsule that was buried 50 years ago.  There will be self guided tours, historical displays and refreshments from 11:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m.  At 6:00 p.m. there will be a short meeting of the Westland City Council followed by a reception hosted by all of Westland's living former Mayors.  To view the event flyer, please click here

Other events scheduled for the summer include the Kick Off the Summer Party which takes place on June 16 at Central City Park.  The event starts at 5:00 p.m. with free hot dogs, snacks, water and giveaways.  There will also be kids safety activities and you can check out the latest police and fire equipment.  Admission to the very popular H20 Zone will also be free.  At 6:00 p.m. attendees will be treated to a special showing of Star Wars: The Force Awakens.

Westland's premier event, Blues, Brews and BBQ will take place on August 4 and 5.  This year's headliner is former American Idol contestant and Westland native, Josh Gracin.  Attendees will be treated to wonderful music, delicious BBQ and craft beers during this 2 day event.  The event will end with a firework display to commemorate Westland's 50 years as a city.

The City is served by two public school districts; Wayne-Westland Community Schools serving 12,000 youth was recently named one of the Best School in Michigan by WXYZ-TV and is the proud recipient of 14 Golden Apple and two Michigan Blue Ribbon Exemplary School Awards.  Livonia Public Schools, educating nearly 15,000 students, is proud of their MEAP/MME scores that exceed state averages and the District has also earned Golden Apple and Michigan Blue Ribbon Exemplary School Awards.


 

Westland's philosophy is that government should embrace good business principles.  Providing oversight over the City's operating budget of $60 million dollars, Westland is the only community in Wayne County with a 3-year balanced budget and an approximately 10 percent budget surplus.
