Radius Brewing Company, LLC to open in Downtown Emporia
Emporia, Kansas 10/02/2012 -- Emporia is brewing up a new business! Justin Bays and Jeremy Johns are proud to announce the arrival of Radius Brewing Company, LLC at 610 Merchant Street in downtown Emporia.
Radius Brewing Company's restaurant will feature creative "New American" inspired flavor combinations with many locally grown products. A wood fired brick oven, fresh local food options, a rotating chefs menu, seasonal fare and many brew inspired dishes will add to the Radius experience. The Radius Brewing Company will eventually contain a production micro-brewery in a "blue-grass industrial" atmosphere that highlights the 1880's facility. The combination of an open kitchen design and expert staff in a bistro inspired operation encourages guests to become part of the brewing and dining experience.
Justin "Gus" Bays decided that "after twelve great years as the Executive Chef at the Grand Central Hotel and Grill in Cottonwood Falls, it is time to create something unique for the community here in Emporia." Justin Bays received his culinary training from Le Cordon Bleu Culinary Institute in Scottsdale, Arizona.
The Brewery portion of the Radius Brewing Company is lead by Jeremy "J.J." Johns. Jeremy's passion for brewing is a family affair. Jeremy and his brothers have home brewed beer for several years, but he is the first person in his family able to share his talent as a professional brewer. "Radius will offer a full service bar and a selection of quality regional craft beers. As soon as we are able to brew in-house we will add four of our own year-round beers and two rotating seasonal/specialty taps", stated Johns. Menus will suggest different Radius hand crafted brews as a compliment to items on the restaurants rotating menu.
Service is the hallmark of any great brew pub, and the "front house" of Radius Brewing Company, LLC is managed by Colby Fuller. Mr. Fuller has extensive restaurant service experience in environments ranging from diners to four star restaurants. Fuller added "We want to create a high quality environment without being overbearing. A professional staff is knowledgeable about all products offered and can act as a leading advocate for other local businesses and events throughout the community as people enjoy Radius Brewing."
Radius Brewing Company, LLC worked with several local individuals and organizations to build their business and financing plan. Emporia Main Street Director, Casey Woods stated "we are very excited to have one of our most requested business categories start in downtown Emporia. With the quality and experience of the individuals involved, we are looking forward to another younger group of entrepreneurs choosing downtown Emporia." Emporia Main Street aided in site selection, finance and planning over the last eighteen months.
Radius worked extensively with Dr. Jim Stephens of the Small Business Development Center at Emporia State University. Dr. Stephens had the following to say about the project: "Radius Brewery came to the ESU-SBDC with a concept, to combine outstanding craft beer with high quality and interesting food centered on a wood fired oven. The SBDC consultants listened and helped Radius partners, Jeremy Johns and Justin Bays capitalize on their respective skills, craft beer brewer and classically trained culinary chef, to bring their ideas together developing a competitive and sustainable business plan. Radius' success will be dependent on the acceptance of craft beer and food lovers in the Flint Hills market and the implementation of the plan."
Craft Brewing is one of the fastest growing industries in the United States with some cities actively recruiting brew pubs as a way to encourage tourism and increased consumer traffic. Radius is currently working with contractors to solidify a target opening date.
