CEO of Project Lead the Way (PLTW), Pine Lake's STEM Curriculum, followed by hands-on activities led by PLP STEM teachers
Dr. Vince Bertram is president and chief executive officer of Project Lead The Way (PLTW). Since joining the organization in June 2011, PLTW has grown to serve more than 9,000 schools across the U.S., trained thousands of teachers, and received numerous national recognitions and awards. In 2014, he was appointed by the U.S. Department of State to serve as the education expert for its United States Speaker and Specialist Program. He has testified before the U.S. House of Representatives, is a frequent contributor to the Huffington Post and other national publications, and in November 2014, became a New York Times bestselling author with his book,
One Nation Under-Taught: Solving America's Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math Crisis.
Dr. Bertram is traveling to PLP from Washington, D.C. for a keynote address that is not to miss.
VEX Robotics Team Reaches Finals in First Competition
Congratulations to the Pine Lake Prep's Upper School's VEX Robotics team, who, in their very first season, made it to the regional finals this weekend at the North Carolina Western VRC Qualifier.
The competition, called "Starstruck" took place at Jay M. Robinson High School in Cabarrus County.
VEX Robotics Competition Starstruck is played on a 12'x12' square field configured as seen above. Two alliances - one "red" and one "blue" - composed of two teams each, compete in matches consisting of a fifteen second autonomous period followed by one minute and forty-five seconds of driver-controlled play.
The object of the game is to attain a higher score than the opposing Alliance by Scoring your Stars and Cubes in your Zones and by Hanging Robots on your Hanging Bar. Learn more about the competition at:

has collected 5 gallons of can tabs for Shriner's Hospital. They are hoping to collect 5 more gallons by the end of the school year.

On and Around Campus This Week
Spanish 3 Standard brought famous architectural sites of the Spanish speaking world into the classroom. They had to make a 3D replica.
Mr. Bitters brought technology and relevancy into English II. He assigned a project to find and collect a story from someone that they know., and then conduct an interview using the StoryCorp app. Here they are Skyping with Abby Easton, Education Associate with StoryCorps in Brooklyn, NY. She spoke to the students for about 30 minutes about the company, oral histories, her background/educational experience, and what we can see from StoryCorps in the future as well as sharing resources for their own questioning skills and narratives.
Chinese Exchange Students at PLP
Pine Lake is hosting 15 students from China for three weeks. The students are ages 11-13 and are shadowing students during their school days. They have said that the PLP educational experience unlike anything they have seen, particularly the hands-on engineering and art classes.
Students performed in a traditional Chinese drum dance to open the Upper School pep rally festivities. They received a very warm welcome from PLP's students!
