Priming your yard for your new puppy!

Properly puppy proofing your home and yard is a critical aspect of preparing both yourself and your family for life with your new furry friend; However, a vast majority of aspiring pet owners aren't quite sure where to begin when it comes to insuring that their home is both as safe and as fun as possible for Spot. Your energetic, bright-eyed, rambunctious pup is capable of a lot: unfortunately, this includes eating, chewing, digging, am much more! At a glance, these present themselves as minor inconveniences, but it's important to understand that without puppy proofing your yard, minor mishaps like these can spell major danger for your puppy.

Fencing

Not everyone has fencing, but it is important to double check durability and safety of the fence if you do. Many times, we feel our pets are safe and secure with a fence around our yards. However, puppies will find any weak point in their barriers. Be sure to search for gaps between the bottom of the fence and the ground so that your new puppy cannot dig their way out of the yard. Also, test your fencing to make sure that each section is securely installed and does not bow or shake when pressed on. Lastly, keep in mind that some fences are jumpable or climbable: shorter fences are no obstacle for pouncing puppies, so we always recommend a 6 ft. fence if possible; also, certain types of wire fencing are easy for pets to get their feet into and climb, so always be sure to keep an eye on your pets whilst in the yard to make sure they don't try to go loose.

Plants

Dogs are not like humans in that they don't know the difference between eating some grass and eating a plant that may be hazardous to their health. While outside, especially during the warmer months, puppies are always sniffing around the yard and nibbling on its contents. So it is imperative to check your yard for any of these toxic plants to ensure your new pet will not end up eating something unsavory. Some common plants to watch out for are velvet grass, daffodils, lillies, nightshade, and holly. You can find a list of the most commonly encountered toxic plants on the ASPCA's Animal Poison Control Center website.

Tools and Substances

Puppies are like small children in that they can get themselves into trouble around tools, equipment, and certain kinds of household/yard substances. Insecticides and fertilizers can be extremely harmful to an animal's life, especially a small, young puppy. So always ensure that not only are these containers removed from your puppy's access, but also removed completely from use in your yard. Additionally, make sure to put away or section off all tools and equipment, like lawn mowers and gardening tools to eliminate any chance of your puppy hurting itself.

Overall, puppy proofing a yard is like child proofing a home. You need to scour over every inch and search for possible dangers to your new pet. Puppies entertain themselves by getting into every nook and cranny of their area, so be sure to secure the perimeter and remove any possible danger or toxins. Once this is done, you can guarantee that your new addition has the happiest and safest play space!
