SPONSORING A REFUGEE FAMILY

"for I was hungry and you gave me food, I was thirsty and you gave me something to drink, I was a stranger and you welcomed me" (Mt 25:35)
YOU Can Be Involved Supporting A Refugee Family!

Meeting is scheduled for tomorrow
at 6:30 pm in the Chapel.
Cate Anderson will present information
and answer questions.

Last year Prince of Peace led a funding appeal in support of outreach to Syrian refugees through the Minneapolis area synod of the Lutheran church. The effort led by PoP raised well over $100,000 to provide life saving and compassionate aid to these vulnerable and at risk children of God. But we are not done yet!

Lutheran Immigration and Refugee Service (LIRS) is committed to engaging Lutheran Churches in deep and structured ways in the refugee resettlement program.  This is not new to LIRS.  As you may recall, in the 1970s, many Lutheran churches worked with resettlement affiliate partners to sponsor refugees and walked with them to successfully rebuild their lives and become productive citizens of their newly adopted homes. Prince of Peace was involved in this important ministry in the past. With the professionalization of the resettlement process, this volunteer avenue has been largely closed for some time and the goal is to revive it in light of current needs and circumstances.

Pastor Chad serves on the LIRS committee working on these important issues which is planning to test-pilot a national initiative to reach out and re-engage Lutheran churches in the refugee resettlement process. Prince of Peace will work with Lutheran Social Services of Minnesota (LSS) to be among the first congregations in the country to get this work started by becoming a Co-Sponsor community.

A Co-Sponsor congregation Partners with a refugee family who is just arriving in United States. The transition period that families experience during resettlement is extremely difficult. They are experiencing culture shock, grieving the loss of their home, family and friends, and adjusting to new requirements, while they try to learn how to navigate an entirely new system. Co-Sponsors help families feel more secure about getting settled in their new community. As a Co-Sponsor community, Prince of Peace will walk with a family from their arrival at the airport and throughout the first few months of this difficult time of transition.

If you would like to serve on the PoP Co-Sponsor team, let us know in the church office. An organizational meeting is scheduled here at Prince of Peace with a representative from LSS Thursday, February 16 at 6:30 pm in the chapel.

PHOEBE HOSPITAL in LIBERIA

Update On Solar Equipment Drive
For Phoebe Hospital in Liberia

Last year Prince of Peace joined with HOPE Liberian church which meets here on our campus to raise funds for a mission hospital in Liberia. Our benefit concert raised over $13,000 toward a solar array system to provide power to this vitally important medical facility. The Lutheran church helped to establish and sustain Phebe Hospital which has provided lifesaving medical care in Liberia, even through the violent civil wars that have ravaged that country.

Imagine you are a surgeon performing an emergency appendectomy when suddenly the lights go out. The refrigerator keeping precious vaccines cold turns off. Patients on oxygen suddenly receive none. Water pumps stop pumping so there's no freshwater. The only back up system is a diesel generator which is prohibitively expensive and unreliable.

Soon, Phoebe Hospital will be able to rely on renewable power provided by solar energy to keep the hospital running. Lutherans from around the country have joined many others to make this dream a reality. The huge shipping containers with all the necessary solar equipment are on their way to Phebe Hospital in Liberia.

Thanks to everyone who helped with the benefit concert and contributed toward this important project!

QUILTERS

The POP Quilters wish to thank all those who have recently donated cotton or cotton/poly fabric, sheets or quilt batting to our group.  Even sheets that aren't perfect (e.g., with spots or tears), can often still be used to make quilt-top squares   Since our December sale, we have donated 46 quilts to various organizations, including the Alexandra Women's Shelter, Home Free Women's Shelter, the Veteran's Hospital, the Avenues for Youth, Camp Wapo and the Salvation Army Harbor Light Center.
We welcome anyone who would like to join us for a morning of fellowship, even if for a one-time visit!    We can always use an extra hand to help "tie" the quilts with yarn - sewing skills are not required.  We meet at the church from 9 am to noon on the first, third and fifth Wednesdays of each month, September through May.

Lent Mentoring

Are you patient? Are you a good listener? Do you have a soft spot for middle school students? Then we are looking for you.
During the reflective season of Lent we aim to partner all of our middle school youth with an adult mentor. Our Lent mentoring practice exists to give kids one more adult in their lives whom they can talk to, trust, and share in their faith journey. In the words of Hebrews 12:1, having a mentor adds to a child's "cloud of witnesses."
Starting March 1, 6:30pm to 7:45pm, and going through April 5, Mentors and mentees meet at 6:30pm for caring conversations and then attend Lent worship together from 7pm to 7:45pm.
A Mentoring Orientation session will be offered Sunday, Feb. 26, 10am in the CLC.
If you would like to learn more about how we 'grow deep. reach out.' during Lent, and to RSVP for an orientation session, contact Brent Haglund, our Director of Youth & Family Ministry.
