Reading Buddy Times

An eNewsletter for Volunteers & Friends of SAYL

July 22, 2014

Happy July!

We have officially closed out the 2013-2014 school year and are on our way to gearing up for the 2014-2015 school year.  We have had great success this past year, especially in our fundraising efforts.  We couldn't be more excited about the position we are currently in, and for the first time in a long time we can actually begin to think about growth and longevity.

As we kick off this new year, we welcome a new Board Chair, Kimberly C. Ford, a Managing Partner at Hill & Ford, P. C.  Kim has been a member of the SAYL Board of Directors for the past five years.  In addition to being a SAYL Reading Buddy, Kim's company has been a long time financial supporter.  We are excited about our new leadership and are ready to start the new school year with fifteen new sites and several new Corporate Reading Buddy Partners.

I would be remiss if I didn't spend some time thanking and bragging a little about our outgoing Board Chair, Amelia Badders, Director of Commercial Analytics and Pricing at CPS Energy.   Amelia has been on the SAYL Board of Directors for six years and served as Board Chair for the last two.  Under her leadership SAYL has been given new life as we weathered a financial storm the last two years.  Amelia's determination and passion for our program set us on a course for sustainability and growth.  In addition, our partnership with CPS Energy has garnered not only financial support but also an army of Corporate Reading Buddies that completely cover the volunteer needs of five SAISD elementary schools in hard to reach areas.  SAYL is grateful to Amelia and her unwavering commitment to SAYL over the past two years.

So here we go, onto a new school year with new leadership and a program full of hope and humility.

SAYL Book Buddies

SAYL BOOK BUDDIES is a new program, started by Reading Buddy Jane Welch. Year after year we hear that many of our students do not own books of their own.  Studies in educational development show that children who grow up owning books are much more likely to finish school. This means they are more likely to avoid the worst outcomes of poverty: dropping out, becoming addicted to drugs and alcohol, teen pregnancy, joblessness.

SAYL BOOK BUDDIES is collecting books suitable for kids in grades 1-6 to be given out at the end of the school year. The goal for SAYL BOOK BUDDIES this first year will be to ensure all 2nd grade students in the San Antonio Independent School District (SAISD), whether they were matched with a Reading Buddy or not, will be able to choose books to take home to keep and read over the summer months. In the future years, we hope to grow the program to reach not just our partner schools, but to all 2nd grade students throughout San Antonio.

You and your child can help achieve this vision and make every child a reader! The books you provide will be read again and again by their proud owners, and even other children in their families. Even parents can improve their reading ability by reading to or with their children!

You can facilitate all this by donating books your child has outgrown or no longer wants. All of these benefits can start by from merely tidying up your child's room and instilling in them the value of giving to others. To donate books to SAYL Book Buddies or to organize a book drive please email [email protected] or call 210-299.1533 to donate.

"I am so excited about the future of San Antonio Youth Literacy.  We have great sponsors that understand the need that this organization can meet as we really make a difference in the children's lives, the lives of their families, and ultimately the entire community of San Antonio as we help these children get on grade level in reading by the beginning of 3rd grade.  We are poised to move into more schools than ever this school year, and are on the verge of reaching all of the 3,000 children who need our services." - Kim C.
