Project AWARE Ohio E-Newsletter
"Advancing Wellness and Resilience in Education"
November 2017
Mission: Cuyahoga Community Team works across systems to improve physical, mental, and educational needs and increase access to appropriate resources and services for youth in Cuyahoga County.
Vision: Cuyahoga County children and families will be socially, emotionally, behaviorally, and academically resilient and productive citizens.

As the leaves continue to fall and the November air turns crisp, it is important that we remember to fall into good habits. In this issue, Project AWARE will highlight to awareness initiatives in November to encourage good habits for our youth, schools, families, and communities. Read about two local organizations that are working to foster these habits in our Partner Spotlight.

National Career Development Month
It is never too early to help prepare our youth for future work. It is important to show the important link between current learning and employment opportunities. The Ohio Department of Education offers comprehensive career development tools, online trainings, and resources for students and teachers. Programs range from interest-to-career mapping, resume building, identification of school/training programs, and budget building. ODE's Career Connections begin in kindergarten and offer practical ways for school counselors, teachers, families, and communities to show students the types of jobs available for them.

National Parental Involvement Day - November 16

Effective parental engagement can lead to many positive outcomes for youth. An intentional, collaborative, and sustainable approach between schools, communities, and families proves to be impactful for children and teens. These partnerships provide students with the support from adults they need for development. There are nine basic principles to facilitate strong parental involvement:
  1. Start Early
  2. Relationships Matter
  3. Understand & Value Families
  4. Link to Learning
  5. Share Progress
  6. Listen & Inform
  7. Expectations
  8. Multiple Opportunities
  9. Persist

Healthy Fathering Collaborative of Greater Cleveland

The Healthy Fathering Collaborative (HFC) is an independent nonprofit corporation that was established by the Community Endeavors Foundation in August 2001 as a working group of providers and funders providing services to fathers, fathers-to-be and young men in Greater Cleveland. The group meets bi-monthly, rotating the meeting among agency sites, allowing the members of the collaborative to become more familiar with each other's programs.

Four primary types of services for fathers available through agencies that are member of the HFC:  1) programs that help fathers address barriers that are impacting their relationship with their child(ren); 2) public agencies working on increasing access to supportive services for fathers; 3) fatherhood development programs; and 4) father-child social/recreational event programs.

White Ribbon Campaign:
The White Ribbon Campaign (WRC) is the largest effort in the world of men working to end violence against women. It is observed in nearly 60 countries around the globe between November 25 (International Day for the Elimination of Violence Against Women) and December 6. Campaigns are led by both men and women, even though the focus is on educating men and boys. Our local campaign will also focus on violence against children and all intimate partners.

The 7th Annual White Ribbon Day in Greater Cleveland and across the State of Ohio will be Friday November 17th, 2017.

Men and women of all ages are invited to observe White Ribbon Day and promote healthy non-violent relationships.   A Public Rally will be held at 12 noon on White Ribbon Day on the steps of the Cuyahoga County Domestic Relations Courthouse.  White ties will be placed on the statues of two of our nation's founding fathers, Thomas Jefferson and Alexander Hamilton.  Young men from the Male Minority Leadership Group at Orange High School will be the featured speakers at the 2017 Rally.  Over 10,000 men, women, youth and children across the State are expected to participate in the campaign this year!
