Disabled Veteran Property Tax Exemption
Governor Rauner signed Senate Bill 107 which improves the Real Estate Tax homestead exemption benefits for disabled veterans in Illinois. Disabilities of 70% or higher will be exempt from all real estate taxes. With a disability of 50-60% the veteran will receive a $5000 exemption and for disability of 30-40% the exemption wil bew $2500. This is in effect with the 2015 taxes to be paid in 2016. Contact your local assessor with questions. The Fremont office can be reached at 847 223-2846.
Turning 65?  File for the Senior Homestead Exemption
If you are a homeowner and have turned 65, do you have the senior homestead exemption?  We see people who are entitled to this exemption but have not filed. (This is not for Saddlebrook owners)

To apply for the exemption you need to visit the Fremont Township Assessor's office. You will need to bring a copy of the deed to the property and proof of age when you apply. If the property is held in trust, you will also need a copy of the trust agreement indicating the beneficiary and signature page.  If you have questions, please call our office at 847 223-2846.

Don't know where your deed is?  You can get a copy of your deed, or other recorded paperwork, from Mary Ellen Vanderventer  Lake County Recorder of Deeds office for $1 per page, or for no fee if you are a Senior Citizen or US Veteran! Call 847 377-2575.
School Zone Speed Law Change Now in Effect!
Starting January 1, 2016 the Illinois law regarding school zones (and construction zones) has a section for "aggravated" speeding offenses for speeding 26 mph or more in excess of the posted speed limit. Speeds of 26 thru 34 over the limit are now a Class B misdemeanors and speeds of 35 or more over the are Class A misdemeanors.

Since speeding in a school and construction zones are mandatory court appearances, the change means that judges can assess greater penalties. Doing 26 or more over the limit is usually not something that is done inadvertently, but it can happen. In any case, please be aware of the change now that school is back in session and, as always, watch your speed.

Do I need a passport for domestic air travel starting January 2016?
People are calling our office asking if they will need a passport for domestic travel. Illinois is one of the Real ID non compliant states. usa-passport.jpg

According to the Department of Homeland Security,  DHS is in the process of scheduling plans for implementing REAL ID enforcement at airports.  DHS will ensure that the traveling public has ample notice (at least, 120 days) before any changes are made that might affect their travel planning.

If you do want to apply for a passport, Vernon Township supplies that service.

Township Officials Scholarship Opportunity
Each year since 1989, the Scholarship Fund has awarded scholarships to graduating high school seniors to continue their education at Illinois colleges/universities.  TOI staff checks all applications for the required elements (letters of recommendation, academic transcript, etc.) before presenting the complete applications to the Board of Directors Education Committee. Committee members establish a ranking system, and each Committee member ranks every application. The top seven this year will then be offered scholarships.

If you are interested in applying for a scholarship or finding out more information about qualifying, download the  2016 Scholarship Application
