Active Shooter Training and Dallas Transparency

Speaking of police training and specifically Active Shooter Training, the ALERRT Center at Texas State University in San Marcos, Texas continues to lead the way. Possibly the best research-based active shooter training in the nation, ALERRT has trained Dallas police officers in the skill of active shooter scenarios. Terry Nichols, one of the founders of ALERRT, provides an excellent description of the active shooter training process at ALERRT during a recent NPR broadcast.

Dallas has been called a leader in police training and transparency. The department says it has taken great strides to avoid the kind of confrontations and incidents that have led to distrust and frayed race relations in some communities. Dallas Police training now emphasizes de-escalation, rather than confrontation.  Their dramatic reduction in the number of complaints alleging excessive and improper use of force and number of shootings involving police are cited in the recent article published by NPR. The article cites two reasons for the decline; training and transparency.
