Puppetry and Postdramatic Discussion
An International Conference on Performing Objects in the 21st Century
University of Connecticut - Storrs, CT
| |
April 1-3
see website for schedule
Contemporary developments in theatre, the visual arts, and new media are transforming the artistic, critical, conceptual, and commercial landscape for puppetry, one of the world's oldest art forms. Today, the term puppetry can be applied to a wide range of objects and images presented in live and mediated performance. These performing objects and animated images continue to appear in traditional venues, but are also exploiting new territories, crossing between artistic worlds, even as traditional boundaries between the arts themselves break down. While theatrical theory is just awakening to the post-dramatic, puppetry has always thrived independently of a dependence on dramatic text. This conference seeks to explore new approaches to critical thinking and theorizing about puppetry and performing objects of all kinds and to bring new multidisciplinary views to bear on the subject of puppetry-conceived in the broadest terms-in order to enrich, expand, and enliven the field of discourse. This conference is the first international scholarly puppetry conference in the U.S.

The Kid Inside: an evening of songs, patter, puppets and profanity Alissa Hunnicutt The Laurie Beechman Theatre - New York, NY |
March 24 & 31
Thursdays - 8:00pm
Alissa is back with her unique blend of cabaret and puppetry for an evening of songs, patter, puppets and profanity. This sweet and dirty, multi-media show reminds you of an inevitable truth: the child you once were is still a big part of who you are. The same kid who is open and vulnerable enough to get really hurt, is also the one who remains an eternal optimist, telling you to get up and go on.
The Kid Inside features videos and six styles of puppetry -- hand/rod, shadow, toy theater, table top, found object and marionette.
"The intelligence and emotional roller coaster of this show is one I will never forget..." says Sue Matsuki of Cabaret Hotline Online, "This show is literally a work of art."
Musical Director/Co-Creator Steven Katz Directed by Warren Kelley Additional puppeteers: Z Briggs, Honey Goodenough, and Chad Williams
