Make water improvements a priority!

When you flush your toilet, you probably don't think to yourself, "Hey, *insert city where you live*, thanks for making this happen." When you pour yourself a glass of water, you probably don't put too much thought into the steps that were taken to make it safe for you to drink. We don't think about these things. We just expect them.

From drinking water and wastewater treatment plants, to water distribution systems and sewer lines, water and sanitation infrastructure is a huge expense for Midwestern communities. In many communities, as much as one-third of all energy costs are used for water and wastewater treatment. Much of the infrastructure in those same communities is more than 30 years old, and needs to either be replaced or updated.

So, what should I do?

This all might seem a little overwhelming, but there's good news! Your state administers State Revolving Fund (SRF) programs, which provide low-interest loans for investments in water and sanitation infrastructure, as well as for the implementation of nonpoint source pollution control.

There are currently two SRFs:

  • The Clean Water SRF funds wastewater treatment, sewer rehabilitation and stormwater quality improvements, as well as non-point source projects.
  • The Drinking Water SRF funds water treatment plants or improvements to existing facilities, water line extensions to existing unserved properties, water storage facilities, wells and source water protection efforts.

These programs can translate to huge cost savings for your community. Look for more details in this month's blog posts.

Have you checked out our Funding blog yet? If not, it's a great place to find funding information and project inspiration. Our blog features funding news we think is too important to hold onto until our next monthly newsletter, so be sure to check in regularly!

In the meantime, if you have questions about how your state's SRF programs can help you fund future water or wastewater improvement projects, email us at funding@msa-ps.com.
