Earth Day Economics: Humanism and Sustainability
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
This Sunday at 1:30pm we'll host a discussion of Earth Day Economics: Humanism and Sustainability. Dr. Mark Lindley, former Assistant Humanist Chaplain at Harvard and author of Gandhi as We Have Known Him, will talk about environmental sustainability and a person-oriented economy. How should Humanists respond to the high number of people who live in poverty and a planet facing catastrophic ecological degradation? Join us for a thought-provoking discussion!
At 3:00pm, the Humanist Mindfulness Group will lead the community in a loving-kindness meditation, where we will focus on compassion and empathy. To learn more about loving-kindness meditation, check out our recent interview with "Doctor Love," Dr. Paul Zak, an expert on on the neuroscience of love, who will be leading a discussion at HCH on May 10.
Mary Roach: Outstanding Lifetime Achievement Award
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ The Annual Outstanding Lifetime Achievement Award in Cultural Humanism is presented at Harvard University each year by the Harvard Secular Society on behalf of the Humanist Chaplaincy at Harvard and the American Humanist Association. Selected by a committee of 20-30 Harvard students each year, this award is given to a figure greatly admired by our students and community for both artistic and humanitarian reasons.
Now in its sixth year, we're excited to announce that the HSS Cultural Humanism committee has chosen Mary Roach based on what they feel is an outstanding contribution to Humanism in popular culture.
Join us for a night of celebration on April 25 in the Harvard Science Center as we celebrate the career of this fascinating Humanist journalist. Reserve your ticket now! |
Project Bread's Walk for Hunger
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Hunger relief has been a central focus of the inaugural year of our service program, Values In Action (VIA). We began with a meal-packaging event in September, and we will conclude by participating in Project Bread's Walk for Hunger on May 6! We invite you to join our team, the Harvard Humanists, in fighting hunger by helping us reach our fundraising goal of $2,500 for hunger relief. Participants may walk all or part of the 20-mile route through the Boston area. We will meet at the Chaplaincy (12 Eliot St) at 7:30 am on the day of the walk and travel together to Boston Common, where the walk will begin. If you would like to join us, you can register online - be sure to add yourself to the Harvard Humanists team. Please contact team leaders Chelsea Link (chelsea.sky.link@gmail.com) and Chris Stedman (cstedman@harvardhumanist.org) with questions.
Harvard Humanist Alumni and 2012 Graduates Reception
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Harvard Alumni are cordially invited to the fourth annual Harvard Humanist Alumni Reunion. Please join us from 3-5 p.m. on Saturday, May 26 at 12 Eliot Street. The event will include an introduction of the organization, Harvard Humanist Alumni.The bulk of the event will be socializing and participants talking about their interest in Humanism, in general and at Harvard. |
Thank You ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Thank you so much to everyone who made a financial contribution to the Humanist Chaplaincy at Harvard and the Humanist Community Project in 2011! Thanks to you we completed our most successful fundraising year ever, both in terms of number of donors and amount raised. We've raised enough to continue with our ambitious plans for the Humanist Community Project -- so, if you're proud of our current work, please know that YOU made it possible! But given that we are a 501c3 with no support from Harvard, we will, of course, continue to need your help to sustain that vision. So keep us in mind for the future, and thanks again for your wonderful dedication to building Humanist community here at Harvard, and everywhere! If you didn't get a chance to donate in 2011, as always you can support us here... |
