Community Outreach

Lara Torres was excited to meet with the local MOPS (Mothers of Preschoolers) group in May. They discussed the power of being a healthy role model to children and even did some 10 minute workouts with no equipment to show them fitness can happen anytime, anywhere.

The American Diabetes Association's National "Get Fit Don't Sit Day" got some Thunder Bay Junior High students up and moving earlier this month!
Bay Athletic Club teamed up with MidMichigan Medical Center - Alpena to challenge TBJH kids to get up and active for 5 minutes of each class. Participation got them entered into a drawing for a healthy pizza party!

Of the 44 classes that participated, our winning class was Ms. Miko's 7th/8th grade Physical Ed class. They devoted 8 minutes, with the cause in mind, by doing a step box workout.

They won a fruit pizza party and learned that too much sitting is equivalent to smoking, and got outside to either walk, run, or play tennis or football.

Lara Torres led a couple through their first Yoga class during a presentation she did to help diabetics manage their bodies better through fitness. Consistent exercise has many positive effects for diabetics like mobility, circulation, weight loss and decreased stress.

Empowering Healthcare Workers

Bay Athletic Club loves supporting our healthcare workers when it comes to staying healthy and walking the walk!  In May we offered a special accountability tracker to all MidMichigan Medical Center - Alpena employees who were also BAC members.  It tracked their overall health, not just workouts.

Every participant who turns in their calendar by Sunday, June 4th will receive a BAC shaker cup and be entered into a drawing for $50 in BAC Bucks!

HEALTHY EATS!

Grilled Kabob Bowl

Summertime loves grilling. Try your hand at some easy to build grain bowls with the added flavor of grilled veggies and lean protein. Enjoy!

Ingredients:
-1/2 pound very lean steak
-1 pint cherry tomatoes
-1 TBSP oil
-3 scallions, white and green split
-1/2 cup rice
-3/4 cup water or broth
-1/4 cup quinoa
-1/2 cup water or broth
-15 oz. can of black beans
-small can of green chilies
-4 cups spinach
-4 wood skewers soaked in water
-salt and pepper

Method:
Chunk the steak into 1 inch or so  cubes. Oil, salt and pepper the  tomatoes and steak. Cut the white
section of the scallion into 1 inch  sections. Skewer the meat, onion and  tomato in alternating fashion until all  are full. Heat your grill to high and grill
for 10 minutes, rotating frequently.

Meanwhile, in a small pot over  medium heat add the rice and broth  and bring to a boil. Then lower the  heat to low, cover and  cook for  10 minutes. Add the quinoa and extra  liquid and recover the pot, cooking an  additional 10.

Combine the drained black beans and  chilis. Heat well. In a bowl for one  serving, add 2 cups of spinach, the  contents of 2 skewers,1/2 cup of  black beans and 1/2 cup of the rice.   Serves 2.

June 2017
Aging  at the Pace of Your Loved Ones

Jeff and I celebrated our 17th wedding anniversary on Memorial Day weekend. My parents, Doug and Judi Haag, will celebrate their 50th anniversary in a few weeks. We are grateful to have journeyed through decades of marriage (and the ups and downs along the way!)

There are many reasons for this -- love, friendship, communication, faith, etc. I'd also like to address the OTHER reason we are still "going strong" in our relationships. It's our commitment to living well. We are able to enjoy common experiences, adventures, travel and hobbies because of our fit lifestyle. Living healthy takes work every single day, but it adds life to your years.

Are you "aging" at the same pace as your loved ones?

That is a tough question and not one we consider a lot. But it matters and it's worth fighting for.

Are you a significant other, parent or a grandparent who is active in your family's life? Or are you missing out because your health is holding you back? If the latter, take steps to change it. Today. You can reverse the aging process with many things, including a healthy diet, daily activity, stress reduction, sleep and meaningful relationships.

Some diseases, illness or injuries cannot be prevented and feel unfair. But having a healthy lifestyle will always give you an upper hand. Fight for your health. Your time on this planet matters. Do good things with it.

Much love to you and your loved ones. I'm cheering you on.
Trina

Sincerely, Trina Gray, Owner, Bay Athletic Club

BAC TEAM MEMBERS INVITED TO TEST GROUP

Sarah Morrison and Trina Gray were selected out of 400,000 fitness coaches to participate in an official Test Group with around 200 other coaches across the country. In May, they completed a new fitness and nutrition program called The Shift Shop that Beachbody will launch this summer, created by super trainer Chris Downing, from Ohio. They continued to enjoy workouts at BAC and Bay Urban along the way, of course! Trina and Sarah were also in Body Beauty and Jeff was in Rips, Ropes and Ride! It was a busy, fun month that lead to great results!

In addition to the 6-day-per-week workouts, they also followed a custom food plan to eat colorful, whole foods that are high in protein, healthy fats and superfoods and low in starchy carbs, as well as fuel up with a daily Shakeology. They prepped meals and snacks to make eating healthy easier.

How will this help our members at BAC? Lots of ways!

-We simply love bringing new ideas and tools back to BAC. (new moves = new fun!)
-We are committed to growing and learning, just like we attend fitness conventions and certifications.
-We will look for ways to incorporate The Shift Shop at BAC, in live Fit Clubs, as a future boot camp or challenge group, or a group fitness class if it becomes a certification.
-We have the inside scoop on a great new food plan and recipes that members can invest in and use as well. You'll see more about this when it launches in July!

CONGRATS TO THE LOCAL BUSINESSES WHO RECENTLY COMPLETED A CORPORATE FIT CHALLENGE!

PROPANE PLUS:
Congratulations to our latest Corporate Fit Challengers from Propane Plus who just wrapped up a four week health and fitness overhaul with 19 co-workers and family members. From newbies in fitness to old pros: they had fun, they were wowed, they felt like a team...and they also earned some results!

Alicia Prevost was the Challenge Champ after losing the largest percentage of her body weight, 5% in just four weeks, and also lost the most pounds overall. Manager of the MI Stop, Brett Burke, was our Inchworm Award Winner, by losing 9.25 inches total! Alicia, who is only 19 years old, said her favorite part of the Challenge was, "learning how to be healthy." Wow indeed.

LAFARGE PRESQUE ISLE QUARRY:
Wow! The crew from the LaFarge Presque Isle Quarry lost 121 inches and 135 pounds in four weeks! Put your hands together for the 22 participants.  This is this company's fourth Corporate Fit Challenge.

Some were in the Challenge to support their co-workers, loved ones or to stay accountable as the warmer summer months approach. Some were in the Challenge to lose weight and inches. Well, they did it! There were great results from all but an extra shout out to Wayne Mischloney who lost 15.6 pounds and 9 inches and to Kim Misiak whose 8 pound loss resulted in losing 5.5% of her original body weight!

The person with the biggest change in percent of body weight was Patrick Greer. Patrick is new to the Corporate Fit Challenge but it didn't stop him from losing...drumroll please...26.4 pounds! This was 9.4% of his original body weight. His coach, Amanda Freeland, said his secret to success was moving more, eating better portions and cleaning up those food choices along with the support of his coach, co-workers and family surrounding him.

Intrigued and want to learn how you can offer this cutting edge program in your workplace? Call 989-356-5600 or email [email protected] We would love to help customize your Corporate Fit Challenge next! A start date IS open in June!
