Center for Poetry

Newsletter I:VII - December 8, 2011

Dear Friends,

As we reach the end of our semester here at the Center, we can't help but look back on the past few months with a smile. We had the pleasure of welcoming a roster of incredible poets to read for our fall series and broke new ground hosting some less-than-traditional events.

We're also looking forward to the excitement that the new year will bring. In January, we'll dive into Nikky Finney's Head off and Split, the National Book Award for Poetry winner this year. And February will see the launch of our Poetry in Motion campaign, a much anticipated collaboration with CATA.

And finally, tonight we will wrap up this semester's programming with our annual Poetry Slam competition (details can be found below).

Thank you all for such an amazing semester!

Sincerely,

WHAT IS MICHIGAN?

2012 College Poetry Contest

Deadline: April 30, 2012

Covered with lakes and rivers, blanketed by trees and rocks, split between two peninsulas, and never more than 85 miles from a Great Lake, Michigan has a rich history.  We Michiganders live through a variety of seasons with peninsular gusto.

With the coming of a new year, a new governor, and a new season, we're asking you to think about what Michigan is and what it means to you through poetry.  We seek student poems that strive to define Michigan by looking at its history and roots, its contemporary culture, and all the dreams for its future.

A selection of poems will be chosen by Christine Hume, author of three books, most recently Shot (Counterpath Press, 2010), and two chapbooks Lullaby: Speculations on the First Active Sense (Ugly Duckling Presse, 2008), and Ventifacts (Omnidawn, 2012). Hume directs the Creative Writing Program at EMU, and will be teaching for Dzanc Books/International Literary Program in Lisbon this summer. The two winning poems will be awarded first and second place prizes (first prize $250, and second prize $150), and will be featured in the 2012-2013 Oaken Transformations Sculpture & Poetry Walk, a nature walk featuring sculpture and poetry.

Oaken Transformations Sculpture & Poetry Walk is an out-of-doors art tour, free to the public, dedicated to showcasing work by talented poets and artists with ties to the state of Michigan.  Visit Oaken Transformations' website for more information.
