Dear Students, Parents, Teachers & Friends of Education,

 2016-2017 REACH Signing Day

Tuesday, September 20, 2016 marked Realizing Educational Achievement Can Happen (REACH) Georgia Signing Day across the state. The Barrow County School System celebrated this day with a special ceremony for REACH Scholars and their families. Superintendent Chris McMichael welcomed family, friends, REACH Georgia financial sponsors, and school system personnel as he introduced the 2016-2017 REACH Georgia Scholars. After reading a commendation to the Barrow County School System from Governor Deal for its participation in REACH Georgia, Representative Terry England requested that those in attendance consider offering financial support for scholarships or becoming mentors for REACH scholars. Governor and Mrs. Nathan Deal addressed the crowd by video, offering congratulations and encouragement to this special group of students. 2015-2016 REACH Georgia Scholars were in attendance to welcome guests and show their support for the new Scholars.

The REACH Scholars signed contracts with the Georgia Student Finance Commission REACH Georgia Program promising to maintain passing grades, attendance, and good behavior, to meet regularly with academic coaches and mentors, to attend REACH events and activities to prepare them for college, to graduate from high school, and to enroll in and complete college. Parents signed the same contracts committing themselves to attend REACH events, to support their students to success, and to maintain open communication with the schools. Community members affirmed their willingness to support the Scholars in their journey to adulthood. To find out how you can become a mentor to a REACH scholar, helping him or her navigate the social landscape, build self-confidence, and act as an adult role model, or if you would like to find out more about how you or your place of business can become a financial supporter, contact Sherri Perry, REACH Georgia Coordinator, at 678-219-3303 or sherri.perry@barrow.k12.ga.us. More about the REACH signing.

Teachers Create Motivational Board for Students

Ms. Rutledge and Mrs. Bailey designed an interactive bulletin board for students at Bear Creek Middle School, entitled, "Take What You Need". Teachers were asked to write motivational messages on sticky notes. When students pass by during breakfast or lunch, they can grab a note. The notes vary from "You are amazing!" to "Don't worry, be happy". The Grizzly students have loved the chance to get positive affirmation whenever they need it!

Food2Kids Donation

Hill's Ace Hardware in Winder has donated annually to sponsor students served in the Barrow Food2Kids program. Their $1000.00 donation this year helps kick off the Barrow Food2Kids fundraising campaign for the 2016-17 school year. This is a cooperative program with the Food Bank of Northeast Georgia that serves students in the Barrow County School System in jeopardy of not having enough food to eat over the weekend. On Friday the weekend backpack of six kid-friendly meals provides food to help combat childhood hunger on the weekends for over 200 students in Barrow County. It takes $275.00 to sponsor a child for the entire school year.

We appreciate Hill's ACE Hardware's continued leadership in helping fight childhood hunger for Barrow County students. Please contact Shannon Derrick or Ellen Petree at 770-867-4527 to find out more about this program and how to help. Also visit www.facebook.com/barrowf2k.
