Support our horse care and rehabilitation efforts

Reeses, a 22 year old Thoroughbred mare, peers into the old stone barn where Project Horse was initially housed in 2008.
Hi, I am Reeses!

I am helping to raise funds today to help cover the expense of rehabilitation and horse care for our very special herd, and here's why...

used to have a job carrying a rider over cross country courses in competition. I was very athletic and enjoyed it, but it ended suddenly with a bad fall and some serious injuries. After the accident, I struggled to walk, let alone ride or run. One day I overhead the humans talking. 'She can't be ridden any more, and we can't afford her. We really need her stall for another horse.'

I was turned out into a field and just left there. I felt tossed aside because I could no longer be ridden. Eventually some humans discovered me, hungry and skinny, with sores all over my body and really overgrown hooves. They decided I needed to be euthanized. Fortunately, before that could happen, I was rescued by Darcy Woessner, who recognized I had plenty of life left in me. She gave me lots of care, attention and love which I hadn't had in so long.

At my new home there were nice humans and there were lots of kids! I could tell the kids really liked me and being with them made me feel good. I began to realize that I was meant to work with kids and adults, helping nurse them back to emotional health, like Darcy had helped nurse me. Darcy and I started Project Horse together with the idea of giving jobs to horses like me, who can't be ridden, but have tons to offer anyway.

When kids work with horses, they learn magnificent life skills because we teach them how to treat us with respect, or get our cooperation by earning our trust. Those lessons are best learned when horses and humans are on equal footing... so no need for any riding.

Even though I am much healthier now, I need special supplements and medications in order to manage discomfort from arthritis and metabolic changes. A lot of the horses at Project Horse need medicine or special care of some kind, just like I do. The humans at Project Horse take really good care of us... but it costs money. So, I am trying to raise $2,000 to help pay for the various supplements, medications and on-going care needs of all the horses here. By making your donation in tribute to me, Reeses, you will be supporting horse care and rehabilitation for all of us!

P.S. - Take a minute and see photos and videos of me on our facebook page!

to helping rehabilitate horses.
"Thank you for all that you have done for [our rescue mustangs] Faith, Hope, Nightingale and Fox Lake. Having such a serene, safe, loving environment, full of compassionate people, has most definitely been a dream come true for all of them!"
 - Carol Poole, Executive Director of the Mustang & Burro Freedom Foundation

Project Horse provided boarding and care to four of this organization's rescued mustangs, while the Mustang & Burro Freedom Foundation worked diligently to secure lifetime space for them in a managed mustang sanctuary in South Dakota. We loved the several months of having Carol's mustangs with us at Project Horse and were very happy and honored to help!
