MAMARONECK SCHOOLS FOUNDATION AWARDS $244,964 IN GRANTS TO LOCAL SCHOOLS

Larchmont/Mamaroneck, NY - March 3, 2017 -- From expansion of the computer programming and robotics curriculum in the elementary schools with new Finch robots to enabling Hommocks Middle School students to explore the world and outer space with Google virtual reality headsets, the 25 new grants awarded by the Mamaroneck Schools Foundation (the Foundation) will positively impact thousands of students across all six schools in the Mamaroneck School District.

This year, the Foundation's grants total $244,964, the largest amount awarded over the past six years. Among the teachers' requests for grants that were funded are: specialized science and technology equipment, art materials and equipment for an outdoor art studio, professional development for teachers throughout the district, high interest books and much more. Cecilia Absher, Foundation President, noted, "it is thanks to our generous, supportive community and the work of our dedicated board and advisory board that we are able to continue to fund teachers' requests for a wide range of educational purposes that over the years have benefitted students in all grades and disciplines."

Over its 21 year history, the Foundation has awarded 455 grants and more than $4.2 million for innovative, teacher-initiated projects outside of the District's operating budget. Grants support many curricular initiatives as well as opportunities for students to have learning experiences outside the classroom.  Next year, the new high school debate team will have funds needed to participate in a broader range of competitions, and with the new lighting system provided to the PACE program at the high school, which has fostered many award winning graduates, students will be able to experience enhanced performances and develop theatre technology skills.

Dr. Robert Shaps, Superintendent of the Mamaroneck School District remarked, "the Foundation provides our teachers and staff the opportunity to think 'big' about their instructional practices and develop creative, innovative and enriching programs made possible through the generosity of the Mamaroneck Schools Foundation and its donors. We are grateful for the extraordinary partnership and collaboration that takes place each year surrounding the grant process."

Funding for the grants will become available in April and the grants will implemented throughout the 2017-18 school year.  Information about all of the grants awarded this year and over our 21 year history is featured here.
