September 30, 2016
Hello all,

Soon the political campaign commercials, mailers, and phone calls will come to an end and there is little doubt that this will be a great relief to all. However, the circus-like atmosphere of the election cycle will be replaced with the realities of new leaders in our state and federal government and the agendas these leaders bring with them into their posts.

It is the responsibility of every eligible American citizen to vote, and it is essential that we, as educators, show up at the polls. We need to ensure that workers' rights are protected and that all Americans have the opportunity to work hard and have a decent standard of living. We need to protect the children that we educate every day by making sure they have access to safe drinking water (uncontaminated with lead), and that every child has the gift of a strong public education. We need to elect leaders who will help all Americans rise together.

There are many opportunities to vote-through an absentee ballot, early in person, absentee voting, or by voting in person on election day. Please do your homework: know your polling place, register to vote if you have recently moved or have never registered, be aware of your schedule, and make a plan to vote. Your future, your children's future,  and the future of your students will be significantly impacted by the results of this election.

See you at the polls!

You may be eligible to participate in a unique international professional development
opportunity for 3-6 months through the Fulbright Program! By conducting educational research abroad, U.S. teachers gain new skills, learn new instructional methods and assessment methodologies and share best practices with international colleagues and students. Teachers also have the opportunity to expand their understanding of other cultures and international education systems that will enrich their U.S. schools and local communities with global perspectives.

This program is sponsored by the U.S. Department of State, Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs and is administered by the Institute of International Education.

Teaching Children About Labor

It's School-Time!  WLHS Offers 3 Contests to Get Labor History Into Wisconsin Schools - Tomorrow's future workers are today's middle and high school students and they are missing out on a vital part of their education  - the story of labor and how unions have helped to build a nation!  Since its founding in 1981, the Wisconsin Labor History Society has made it a key mission to urge the teaching of workers and labor history in our state schools.  This year, as in the past, we are offering great cash prizes to middle and high school students to encourage their study of labor history:

  • Labor History Essay Contest for high school students (Grades 9 - 12).  Prizes from $500 to $100 go to up to eight students each year for essays of 750 words.  See details.
  • National History Day for middle and high school students (Grades 6 - 12).  A total of $1,000 in prizes go to students throughout the state each year for exhibits of various types that have a labor theme.  Read More .
  • Zeidler Academic Awards for college students for best papers on Wisconsin labor history by undergraduates ($500) and graduate students ($1,000).  See details.

Generous contributions from individuals, local labor unions and area councils make these prizes possible.   Just an FYI . . the statewide essay contest is judged by UWGB Professors Harvey Kaye,

Jon Shelton and Alison Staudinger.

Also, the contests offer a great opportunity for parents, grandparents, other relatives and friends to urge their students to participate and to relate their own histories about work life to the young people.
