WORKSHOP OVERVIEW

This webinar will provide information to people who are new to the deaf-blind community or want to brush up their skills on how to be effective Support Service Providers (SSPs). Training topics include: overview of the Deaf-Blind community & cultural aspects, common communication methods used by deaf-blind people & roles and expectations of an SSP & strategies that empower Deaf-Blind people while providing SSP services.  The session will be co-presented from a Deaf-Blind consumer's perspective on the use of SSPs and that of an experienced SSP. Content covered will be introductory and further hands-on practice will be necessary to apply the information learned.    

PRESENTER BIO
Christopher Woodfill is the Helen Keller National Center Regional Representative serving the Mid-Atlantic region (NY, NJ, PR and VI). He has Usher Syndrome, Type I. Prior to his affiliation with HKNC, he worked for thirteen years as a high school teacher at the Wisconsin School for the Deaf. He also worked for three years as an English as Second Language instructor at English Language Institute at Gallaudet University. He holds a Bachelor degree in history and Spanish from Gallaudet University, a Master degree in Latin American Studies from George Washington University, and Master degree in Bilingual-Bicultural Secondary Deaf Education from McDaniel College. He is currently serves on the boards of the American Association of the Deaf-Blind and the World Federation of the DeafBlind.
How the Webinar Works
Never participated in a webinar before? No problem! Here are a few tips to make your experience a smooth one:
  • You simply need access to a computer with high speed internet. Webcams are not required.
  • On the morning of the live session you will receive a link with log-in access credentials. You will also be given a link to test your equipment. It is critical to test your system prior to the start of the webinar.
  • If you are not available for the live session, a link to the recording will be provided within the next few days following the session.
  • In order to earn CEUs you must view the session in its entirety and complete the evaluation at the end.
