RESNET and the American Society of Home Inspectors (ASHI) Team to Promote Improved Energy Performance of Existing Homes

The American Society of Home Inspectors (ASHI) and the Residential Energy Services Network (RESNET) are joining forces to promote improved home-energy performance in the United States. As part of the agreement, ASHI will help educate its home inspector members to become RESNET certified Home Energy Survey Professionals.

The goal is to have ASHI members conduct home energy surveys as an adjunct to the home inspection of a home being sold. This will give the buyer of an existing home basic information on the energy performance of a home and suggest cost effective energy improvements that can be made to the home. If it appears that major work needs to be done the home inspector will recommend that a comprehensive home energy rating be undertaken.

Another key provision of the partnership is for RESNET and ASHI to work together to convince the U.S. Department of Energy to recognize building inspectors that are certified as Home Energy Survey Professionals to participate in the Home Energy Score program.

Established in 1976, ASHI is a non-profit voluntary professional society of private, independent home and building inspectors practicing throughout North America. Members of ASHI provide individual consumers with a visual examination and written report of the condition of the physical structure and systems of the home. Today, with 6,000+ members and 80+ chapters, ASHI is the largest professional association for home inspectors in North America. Through ASHI’s continued efforts, ASHI's Standards of Practice—covering all of a home's major systems—are now part of many pieces of state legislation and are recognized by consumers as the authoritative standard for professional home inspection. All ASHI Certified Inspectors are required to obtain annual continuing education credits in order to stay current with building technology, materials and professional skills.
