November 2014
President's Message
To begin, I would like to express my appreciation to Tom Durham, the Rocky Mountain Coal Mining Institute (RMCMI) Board and Judy Colgan for the guidance and leadership they provided during this past year in preparation for the 2014 RMCMI Convention. Furthermore, we wish to recognize the efforts of various Committee Chairs and many volunteers for planning and executing a very successful 2014 Convention.

The theme for the 2015 RMCMI Convention will be Coal-Powering the Way. Although our industry continues to be closely scrutinized, coal continues to provide 40% of our nation's power and is essential to help maintain our national energy and economic security. It goes without saying, or maybe we should be saying it louder and more often, that coal is our most abundant and cost efficient source of fuel that is available for energy consumption. As a transition fuel, it delivers a reliable and economically viable base that provides the opportunity for other forms of energy to build upon creating a balance between coal and the environment. This is why coal will continue to be the fuel that will continue to power the way providing the base for other energy sources to build.

Although the Clean Air Act, as it is being applied to coal-fired power plants, has resulted in the closure of several plants throughout the United States it will soon become evident that the more we shift away from coal which yields $40 per megawatt hour (MWH) as compared to other sources of energy production such as natural gas ($70 per MWH) or solar ($280 per MWH), the more of a negative impact it will have on consumed energy prices and power availability throughout the country. Even though there will be fewer plants, coal production is expected to remain fairly constant at or slightly above the one billion ton/year rate. The remaining power plants will need to run at peak capacity on a consistent basis to try and maintain the integrity of the power grid as the other sources of energy are not sufficient enough to offset the loss of the power generating capacity.

A Note from the Executive Director
The Rocky Mountain Coal Mining Institute and Friends of Coal West have spent the past few months going around the region to build the army of troops in support of the industry.  We have been from North Dakota to Texas and everywhere in between to spread the word that it takes each and every one of us to battle the war that is being waged against the coal industry.  As much as each organization and association is involved, it takes each one of you to be a partner in defeating the EPA regulations, educating the public and working to promote the benefits of coal.  Stand up and speak up.  Be active on social media, make comments to your elected officials, newspapers and publications, be active with your state and regional associations - make your voice heard!  Please let us know if there are events we can help support, and how we might help you in your efforts. Join Friends of Coal West here.
RMCMI and Friends of Coal West Sponsor Ad Campaign on Broncos Radio Network
A series of ads is running during the Bronco games on Sundays, and during traffic and weather times on the Broncos Radio Network.  We are encouraging listeners to send comments to the EPA to keep coal in the mix for affordable energy.  RMCMI is part of the Partnership for a Better Energy Future, so we are directing people to the comment page on their website.  Primarily, people can see the additional businesses and organizations who are joined together stop the EPA regulations that would damage our industry and the U.S. economy.  Please click here to listen to the ads.

Friends of Coal West Events

Recently, the Southeastern Utah Energy Producers Association held an Affordable Energy Rally in Price, Utah.  Friends of Coal West was a major sponsor of the event, which had about 6,000 people in attendance.  We were able to give out hundreds of shirts and stickers, and get hundreds to join Friends of Coal West and our efforts to get comments in to the EPA about concerns with the Obama Administration's Clean Power Plan and the effort to eliminate coal from our nation's energy mix.

Alex Epstein was the keynote speaker for the rally. Alex is the president of the Center for Industrial Progress, and he previewed his new book, The Moral Case for Fossil Fuels. You may read a sneak preview of the book  here.

FOCW has also helped sponsor energy rallies in Denver, Colorado and Gillette, Wyoming; the National Girls Fastpitch Tournament and a dasher board at the hockey rink in Gillette, Wyoming. Stay tuned for information about the Friends of Coal reception to be held in Denver in February.

Texas Westmoreland Coal Co. Recently Celebrated Their 200,000,000 Ton Celebration

2015 Scholarship Information
2015 scholarship information and applications are now available online.

The Rocky Mountain Coal Mining Institute is proud to help students further their education as they continue to "promote western coal through education".  Eight Engineering/Geology scholarships are awarded annually to students at a four-year university entering their junior or senior year.  Students must be a resident of one of the eight RMCMI member states and looking for a career in the coal industry.  The scholarships are $2,750 per year and may be given for up to two years.  The selected students are also offered an all-expense paid trip to the RMCMI Annual Meeting & Conference in late June where they have the opportunity to meet industry leaders and attend all the technical sessions.

Additionally, eight Technical School scholarships are awarded to students in technical programs who hope to take their education into the coal industry, where there is a great demand for technical applications.  This is a one-time $1,000 award.

Remembering the Miners
A few years ago, Mike Rowe, host of the television show "Dirty Jobs," filmed a brief video thanking miners for what they do every day to keep this country moving. We feel it is appropriate to circulate the clip again.

It is about 2 minutes in length, and can be viewed here.
