Behind Closed Doors: How Can We Prevent  Domestic Violence Homicides?
In recent years, murders in New York City have plummeted to record lows. However, domestic violence homicides -- acts in which a perpetrator kills a family member or intimate partner - have not decreased at the same rate. While overall murders declined by over 40 percent between 2002 and 2013, domestic violence homicides dropped 20 percent during the same time period. They now comprise one in every five homicides in the city.

To mark Domestic Violence Awareness Month, leading specialists from law enforcement, researchers and service providers will brief the press on innovative approaches underway in New York City and elsewhere to reduce the deadly toll of domestic violence. Details of a special fellowship program for journalists interested in learning about the issue further will also be announced.

This on-the-record briefing, hosted by John Jay's Center on Media, Crime and Justice in collaboration with the Mayor's Office to Combat Domestic Violence, is open to all journalists, but space is at a premium.  Please sign up today.

RSVP with "NYC DV" in the Subject Line, and send your first name, last name, and media outlet in an email to rmartinez@jjay.cuny.edu.
