Faculty Update:
The Power of Poetry

Professor Charlie Bondhus has been enriching our RVCC student writers' minds since  2010. In addition to composition, he teaches Creative Writing and Intro to Poetry. He will be teaching an LGBT Literature class for the first time this upcoming spring.

Professor Bondhus' accomplishments and published works take him far and wide. His latest poetry book, Divining Bones, was recently accepted by Sundress Publications and will be published in 2019. He has also been awarded a fellowship to the Hawthornden Castle International Retreat for Writers, which will allow him to spend a full month writing in a medieval castle in Scotland.

Currently, three RVCC dance students and their professor, Loretta Fois, are choreographing a recital centered around poems from Bondus' published work, All the Heat We Could Carry (Main Street Rag, 2013). The performance will be showcased as part of the Fall Dance Concert on December 13th and 14th.

Professor Bondhus has also partnered with RVCC Theatre Director, Alan Liddell, to host a Guest Writer Series. They hope to invite one prose writer each fall, and one poet each spring. Last April, RVCC hosted poet Patricia Smith, and on November 20th, the series is hosting critically acclaimed author, Sapphire. All events for the Guest Writer Series are free and open to the public, and RVCC Alumni are encouraged to attend!
Alumni Update
Bridging the Path Between Science
and Humanities

Katie Agin '06, graduated from Raritan Valley with Associates Degrees in English and Humanities, moving on to Rutgers College to receive a BA in English.  She was  an officer of the RVCC's chapter of the of the International Honor Society, Phi Theta Kappa and received the English Department Award of Honor.

Katie is currently the Marketing and Communications Manager for the IEEE Photonics Society, the hub of a vibrant technical community dedicated to transforming breakthroughs in quantum physics into the devices, systems and products  (fiber optics, lasers, solar energy, LEDs, and more) to revolutionize our daily lives for the benefit of humanity.

"There is a need within STEM (science, technology, engineering and math) for those with humanities and communications backgrounds. It is possible to choose a path that bridges the two; they are not mutually exclusive fields," she says. While pursuing her English degrees at Raritan and Rutgers, she balanced her experience by taking classes in coding, web design and graphic design to expand her pool of career possibilities. She worked for several years as an editor at a national health magazine, before transitioning to communications and web design roles in the travel, luxury goods and tech industries.

Katie also is a black belt in Tae Kwon Do, is certified to teach aerial yoga and is currently pursuing another yoga teacher certification.
