Rector's Reflections
Radical Love Triumphs
For most of human history wisdom was largely part of an oral tradition. From one generation to the next, wisdom was passed down. These days it sometimes seems that technology has replaced that tradition of shared wisdom. Rather than ask a trusted elder the temptation is to pull out a smartphone and do a quick Internet search. Next thing you know, there it is, wisdom at your fingertips-maybe. Could it be that something is lost in the process? We can find facts online, but virtues like humility, respect of elders, hospitality, servanthood, and peacemaking do not seem to translate as easily in the electronic age. In the gospel reading Jesus takes the time to pass on some ancient-yet-prudent wisdom from the proverbs of Solomon to a crowd of social climbers who obviously were not familiar with such prudence or wisdom.

More significantly Jesus lifts up the mysteriously gracious and life-transforming values of the kingdom of God. Jesus lifts up the humility required to take the lowest seat at the table, never hoping to be invited to a place of greater honor or status. Jesus invites his followers to practice the hospitality that offers a banquet of the finest of foods for people who cannot repay. Jesus invites his followers to embody the kind of radical-yet-relational love of Jesus himself. This radical love is taught by both individuals and congregations. Communities of faith by their practices of generosity and compassion embody the love of Jesus in their communities. [ Sundays and Seasons, 2016]

Invited and inviting is the nature of the church. By God's grace in holy baptism and at the banquet table of the Lord , we have and know our place. We are more inviting when by the power of that same Spirit, humility and mutual love continue among us. We do this weekly where the font of faith and forgiveness and table of sustenance and salvation are open for all to splash, taste and see that the Lord is good.

Come splash and eat this Sunday!

Baptism
Let the sea roar, and all that fills it, the world and those who dwell therein. Let the rivers clap their hands, and let the hills ring out with joy before the Lord. [Psalm 98:7-8]

Joined to Christ in the waters of baptism, and clothed with God's mercy and forgiveness, let us give thanks for the gift of baptism. Sunday we welcome Marguarite Lincoln Whitridge and Olivia Connors Whitridge, daughters of Andrew and Catrina Whitridge to the waters of Holy Baptism during worship at 10:00 am.

Officially Becoming an "All Sainter"
Perhaps you have been connected this faith community for a few months or for many years. Perhaps you've always wondered about becoming an official "All Sainter" with your connection recorded in church records and have the ability to vote during parish meetings. Perhaps you've wondered why Episcopalian's are vague about membership. If you've wondered about any of these things or desire to officially become an "All Sainter", please contact the rector and consider attending an inquiry gathering 9:00-9:45 am or 11:15-noon on Sunday, August 28th. We will hold an official welcoming during the Bishop's Visit, September 11th.
Flower Workshop
A FLOWER WORKSHOP will be held in the undercroft meeting room on Thursday, September 8th at 10:00 am.  If  you have questions, please contact Louise Graham 569-2876.
Note from the Treasurer
Pledge statements through the month of June were distributed last month.  If you did not receive yours, or if you saw any corrections needed, please let me know.

Please also note if your pledge contributions are current through the first half of the year.  Cash flow at the church is greatly assisted by your attention to this detail.

Thank you so much for ALL you do for our Church!

A Season of Thankfulness
"I am the vine; you are the branches. If you remain in me and I in you, you will bear much fruit; apart from me you can do nothing." John 15:5
Bishop Rob reminds us "when Jesus identifies himself with a grapevine and God the Father as the vinedresser, he's not talking about making grapes.  He's talking about the resilient, relentlessly outstretching, and healthy life that God longs for all of us." With Jesus as the vine, we are the branches that are connected to God and one another. We grow and produce good fruit through our life together for one another and for the sake of the world.

During the coming weeks, we will be focusing on the abundant leaves of blessing, the gifts we are given and give thanks for. Your worship bulletin will contain a green leaf of thanksgiving each week for you to share a blessing you are thankful for and place in the offering plate. We will share some of the blessings in worship and visually connect them to an ever growing vine of interconnectedness. The leaders of All Saints' hope the growing display of our abundant blessing moves us to recognize more and more the many ways we are blessed.

Thank You
A big thank you to Phoebe VanScoy-Giessler who has faithfully served as our communications guru and eNews editor for many years helping us keep connected. Phoebe has taken a new job and is unable to continue serving in this role.

Good and Gracious God, we praise you for your creation, for keeping us and all things in your care, and for all the blessings of life. We thank you for the gift of communications that connect us to you and one another, especially for the ministry of Phoebe VanScoy-Giessler and her work here at All Saints' Wolfeboro. Above all we give thanks for your immeasurable love in redeeming the world by our Lord Jesus Christ, for the means of grace, and for the hope of glory. Guide us to love and serve you with thankful hearts, with our lips, and our very lives; through Jesus Christ our Lord, to whom, with you and the Holy Spirit, be all worship and praise, now and forever.
Amen.
You're Welcome (and Help Wanted!)
It has been a pleasure to serve as the editor of the eNews for the last 5+ years. (Imagine - my youngest fella wasn't even a thought when I started and now he is 4!) My new career will require a longer commute, more hours per week, and (gasp!) no summer vacations. To that end, I will need to say goodbye to this part of my All Saints' ministry.

Now's YOUR chance to get in on the the fun. Ask yourself:
  • Can I use basic word processing programs and navigate a website?
  • Do I have moderate to high speed access to the internet?
  • Do I want to have my finger on the pulse of All Saints' happenings, receiving no less than one email a week directly from the pastor and parish administrator?!
  • Do I wish to feel more empathy for people who confuse its and it's? there, their and they're? alter guild and altar guild?
  • Would I like a sneek peek at our parish photographers' fanastic work?
  • Do I do some of my best work at home in my pajamas watching reruns of my favorite shows on Netflix? (Glass of wine optional but highly recommended).
If you answered 'yes' to any or all of these question, perhaps YOU are our next eNews editor! After you get the hang of the program, the job usually takes less than an hour a week. Please feel free to email me if you have additional questions about the job. Or if this is JUST the ministry you are looking for, contact (a very grateful) Pastor Bill ASAP.

Finally, thank you for your patience with me when things did not go out accurately or in a timely matter.

Phoebe VanScoy-Giessler
