Dear Friends,
In this Sunday's Gospel reading, Jesus has much to say about the behaviors of guests and hosts at a dinner party. At the end of this passage, he challenges the party to invite people unlike themselves into their lives.
Every time I hear any story that relates to welcome or invitation, I am immediately brought back to two experiences I have had in two very different parts of the world. The first was in Malaysia. I was quite overwhelmed by the sincere welcome I received into the homes and hearts of the people I met. When I first arrived, I stayed with a family who spoke no English and I had yet to learn Malay. Yet, because of their gracious spirit, we communicated much about important things of life, especially prayer. It was my first real encounter with Muslims, and their faithfulness in prayer was quite astounding.
The other profound experience I've had with this kind of hospitality comes from the Arabs I meet in Palestine. Fortunately here, most speak English so we can share stories as well as acts of faith. Here too I meet faithful Muslims alongside the Arab Christians. There lives are so dependent on others, yet, they are willing to share all that they have with privileged Americans like me.
I have carried these experiences with me as I work with the Church to bring the good news that God welcomes us all into his heart. I regularly give thanks to God for these people who opened their hearts to the likes of me.
- Debbie

See the "Thought for the Week" for a description of this week's Gospel.
At 10:30 am, the Rector will bless another week's worth of harvest from the Abundant Life Garden farmed by our children. Every child is welcomed to come and "dig in the dirt," to provide fresh produce for those in need.
At 5:00 pm, at the Celtic Evensong and Communion, we will consider people in our lives who have led us to a fuller life in God.
Please join us wherever you are in your search for meaning.

This is a wonderful team ministry we have with St. Peter's, Beverly. The diners at the St. Peter's Sunday Night Suppers are delighted with the vegetables this summer from our garden. All young people are invited to come and have fun while learning about farming in other parts of the world and the relationship it has with their faith.

Blessing of Backpacks September 4
at 10:30 am service
|
All students are invited to bring their backpacks to church on September 4th for a special blessing as they either start kindergarten or return to school. Following the service we'll have a special reception for them.
|
Our first rehearsal will be Wednesday, September 7 at 7:30 pm. Debbie says she has heard a number of voices in the congregation this summer who would be great additions to the choir this year. Please consider joining us for our first rehearsal on a trial basis and see if it is a fit for you. There will be wine and cheese at the end of the first rehearsal, if that might entice you further! The choir will sing on Sundays at 10:30 am beginning September 11th.

Community Potluck
September 11 at 11:45 am
|
Start looking through your recipes for your
choice of dish for the potluck on September 11. Everyone is welcome to come and share stories about the summer, hear a bit about upcoming programs and elect our two delegates to November's Diocesan Convention.

Encountering the Bible: Healing
|
Beginning Wednesday, September 21, there will be a four part study of healing stories from the Bible. Not only will we look at passages related to physical healing, but we will also consider the healing of relationships, the healing of divisions within the Church, and the healing of the earth. Each session will begin at 6:00 pm with Evening Prayer, followed by Bible Study at 6:30 pm. The studies will take place on the following Wednesdays: September 21 and 28, October 12 and 19 for approximately one hour. Please let Debbie know if you would like to lead the Evening Prayer one week.

There are going to be a few new ways of being involved with the 6th grade scholars this year. But before that, there are a few things coming up:
Thursday 25 August:
Debbie will be meeting with The Rev. Michael Melendez, a Deacon in the Episcopal Church who is also faculty at Salem State University in the Social Work Department. We will be considering ways interns at SSU will engage some of the boys in this class in leadership development and mentoring.
Wednesday 31 August:
Those interested in the partnership this year will gather at 6:30 pm to share our own experiences and ideas for the school.
Wednesday 7 September:
We will be on hand to greet the scholars on their arrival for the first day on school.
Other ideas that are brewing:
A 1-to-1 campaign at Grace Church to see what our common interests are with public school education in Salem and across the country.
A yearlong "penpal" project where each student has a member of Grace Church who shares a notebook full of letters to one another. These notebooks would be exchanged once a month by a volunteer from Grace.
Attending School Committee meetings as advocates for the Bowditch School.
In-class assistance during the school day.
Little Free Library project.
There's much going on! Come and let us know what you think. We really want to hear from you on Wednesday 31 August at 6:30 pm.
|
Adult Study:
Yes, I go to the Episcopal Church
(though I'm not quite sure what that means)
|
We each have our own story to tell of how we landed here, and we each have our own way of exploring what this means. You are invited to come on Sundays at 6:00 pm for a light hearted yet informative look at the Episcopal Church. The study will meet the following Sundays: October 2, 16 and November 6, 13 and 20 for approximately one hour.
