CHIAROSCURO PAC RELEASES

"SEPARATE AND UNEQUAL" RADIO AD IN SENATE DISTRICT 41

Senator Terry Gipson Advocating

Non-Doctor Abortions for Low-Income Women

New York--Sept. 23...The Chiaroscuro PAC today announced that it will be airing a new 60-second radio advertisement in New York's 41st State Senate district, which covers Poughkeepsie and portions of the Hudson valley.

The 60-second spot, entitled "Separate and Unequal," takes incumbent state senator Terry Gipson (D) to task for pushing legislation in Albany that would allow non-doctors to perform abortions in New York. It would also permit virtually unrestricted abortions through the ninth month of pregnancy.  Non-doctor abortions, if made legal, would predominantly be performed on low-income, minority women, Chiaroscuro says. The group believes believes the Gipson bill would create two categories of abortions in New York -- physician abortions for women who can afford doctors and less safe, non-physician abortions for low-income women.

An explosive news expose earlier this year showed that a majority of New York abortion clinics haven't been inspected in more than a dozen years.

"Senator Gipson's bill is wrong on so many levels, but its creation of a second tier of less safe abortions for low-income working women is especially damning," said Chiaroscuro PAC Treasurer and spokesman Greg Pfundstein. "Apparently Senator Gipson thinks doctors aren't necessary to abort the children of struggling New York women. Chiaroscuro works to educate New Yorkers about alternatives to abortions, but it also believes that women deserve the best possible medical care no matter what they decide."

"Separate and Unequal" can be heard here.  The full script is below.

Separate and Unequal :60

Separate but equal.

We thought America had evolved since then.

But Senator Ted O'Brien is treating poor New York women now as separate and unequal.

It's deplorable.

Senator Ted O'Brien wants non-doctors to perform abortions on New York's poorest women.

That's right. Most New York women have access to doctors.  But under Senator O'Brien's bill, non-doctors would perform abortions at clinics where poor, mostly minority women go.

Senator O'Brien would even allow non-doctors to perform abortions on girls as young as 13 or 14 years old...without their parents' knowledge.

It's insane.

Senator O'Brien claims to be progressive. Then promotes a bill like this. He oughta be ashamed of himself.

Poor women deserve the same medical care as everyone else, Senator O'Brien.

I mean, really. What are you thinking?
