CENTER HIGHLIGHTS
L-R: Tonija Navas, MP David Lammy, Prof. Tiffany Simmons, Esq.
On March 23-24 th  the Bunche Center had the pleasure of hosting scholars, law enforcement officials, NGO leaders and students for our conference,  Global Perspectives on Police, Law and Society: Common Ties Across Communities of Color.   Over the course of two days we shared information and learned from one another about the common issues faced by communities of color in different parts of the world with regard to police/community interaction and engagement. We heard about the very real challenges faced by police officers in the line of duty in terms of the emotional tolls of the job and how that affects them.  We learned about research being done to identify patterns in policing that negatively affect communities of color. We heard from people on the front lines working to support those affected by mounting fines that disproportionately target communities of color.
MP David Lammy of the UK’s Labour Party provided insight into the current situation of people of color in the UK with regard to incarceration and Ms. Ana Almeida of the Inter-American Commission on Human Rights provided a preview of their upcoming report on policing in the Americas. Many powerful and important conversations were had, connections made and information shared. Academic papers presented at this conference will be available in a forthcoming Bunche Center publication expected in August 2018.
Prior to Spring Break, students joined Professor Lugo De Fabritz - professor of Russian at Howard University - for a Russian animation midterm study break as part of our Russia 101 series. Through a sequence of selected Russian animated classics, attendees learned of the important role animation had as a propaganda tool during the Soviet period and as a promoter of Russian culture in the post-Soviet era.
On March 7th, the Bunche Center, in collaboration with our partner CIEE, hosted our first joint Passport Caravan. We gave away over 90 passports to primarily freshmen and sophomore first time applicants as part of CIEE's Generation Study Abroad initiative to giveaway 10K passports to U.S. students across the US. This was made possible in part due to CIEE's generous donation and the contributions of various other donors. The Bunche Center extends a heartfelt thank you to all who helped make this happen. *See video below*

REFLECTIONS FROM ABROAD
Alternative Spring Break Ghana
MaRaina Montgomery, Study Abroad Manager
It was the actualization of a professional aspiration to travel with a vibrant group of Howard students to Ghana, West Africa. This was made possible due to the vision and effort of Dr. Beverly Ammah-Booker, a faculty member within the School of Education/ Counseling MA program, and the dedication to empowerment of Dean Bernard Richardson and Mr. Glen Vinson, the leadership behind Howard's thriving Alternative Spring Break Program. As a result of this exemplary collaboration of Howard departments and invested professionals, 14 graduate and undergraduate students were lifted up and made able to take this pilgrimage to the "Gold Coast" of Africa.

During the 10-day service-learning pilgrimage, students spent 12-15 hours a day gaining a holistic introduction to Ghana's past, present and future prospects. The Howard team invested their time volunteering at two schools and a hospital, absorbing the palpable energy felt within spaces where the history of slavery and acts of resistance and resilience took place, engaging in critical discussion, language acquisition, dance and musical performance with faculty and students at two of Africa's most renown universities, the University of Ghana-Legon and Cape Coast University, and reflecting deeply on their personal position in life and that of the communities in which they lead from within. In a nutshell, the student remarks about the journey summarize it all best, stating that is was a "transformative," "inciting," "empowering," "influential," "life-changing," freeing," "motivating," "purposeful," "reviving," "powerful," "renewing" and "spiritual" experience to be remembered forever.
