Message from the Director

Greetings New and Returned Bison Family,

We are so excited to jump into this new academic year with you all! We have many exciting things planned and we invite you to take full advantage of all of our programming. This year, our annual series, “Colombia Ahora/Colombia Now” will focus on the South American country of Colombia which elected a new president, Ivan Duque, last month. President Duque takes office following increased attention to Colombia stemming from the Peace Accords signed by former President Juan Manuel Santos last year which was meant to end the 50+ year civil war that has affected so many people in Colombia, most of whom are of African descent or indigenous. Our series will explore the path forward for Colombia under the new administration, the current climate for business, trade, media, education, health, human rights, the environment, and the arts. We will hear from Colombian government officials, scholars, experts, and Colombians who have been impacted by recent decisions, policies, programs, etc. To complement our series we will continue work with different HU schools and colleges to identify ways in which faculty and students can engage directly with Colombia through exchange and collaboration. As a first step, Spring 2019 will mark the launch of a new semester long study abroad program in Cali, Colombia which we co-designed with our partner CET Academic Programs. The program, "Race, Ethnicity & Identify in Colombia" will be open to Howard students and students from across the US.

Additionally, we have a robust program designed to support students around their interest in study abroad. Information on financing study abroad, what to expect when abroad, etc. as well as opportunities for returned study abroad participants to share and reflect on their experiences during their time away from Howard. Follow us on social media or visit our website for up to date information.

We are also working on an international careers forum and fair to be held on November 15 th . Invited companies, NGO’s, government agencies, etc. will gather to meet prospective interns/employees and discuss opportunities with their organizations. Throughout the day we will host different discussions and workshops with comprehensive information on the international careers that exist in different fields and across the disciplines.

Lastly, we are now the home to three of the most prestigious graduate fellowship programs in the country for careers in diplomacy/foreign service. The Charles Rangel, the Thomas Pickering, and the Donald Payne Fellowship Programs are all housed at the Bunche Center and we encourage HU students and alumni to take advantage of that and stop in to see us for more information.

We look forward to an exciting year, full of global opportunities and excellence!

See you soon!

Globally, in Truth and Service,

Tonija Hope Navas

CENTER HIGHLIGHTS
STUDY ABROAD RETURNEE MIXER
Spring and Summer 2018 Summer Study Abroad cohorts gathered for the first time since returning to Howard to share their experiences. The mixer, led by Study Abroad Manager, MaRaina Montgomery, took place in the Valley with treats supplied by IES representative Noelle Baldwin. The Bunche Center is thankful for IES' support of the #StudyAbroadSoBlack initiative and our students. We welcome all returnees back to campus and we look forward to sharing each of your unique stories!
FRESHMAN ADDRESS
Tonija Hope Navas, Director of the Bunche Center, had the opportunity to address the incoming Freshmen class during Bison Week. It was thrilling to see great interest from this class in study abroad, the federal fellowships we house, as well as our ongoing global programming. We believe that the Class of 2022 will one of the the most "Afropolitan" classes to leave Howard! We look forward to supporting their international and intercultural journey here at Howard.
ALGERIA
On August 31st, the Bunche Center, in collaboration with Gabriel J. Christian, JD, was pleased to welcome Dr. Ismail Chikhoune, President & CEO of the US-Algeria Business Council to discuss "Algeria: A Hub of Socio-Economic and Scientific Innovation in the 21st Century." From breakthroughs in technology, pharmaceuticals and agriculture, Mr. Chikhoune highlighted the advancements his country has made and outlined Algeria's contribution to the U.S. and the world.

REFLECTIONS FROM ABROAD
Yoruba Group Project Abroad in Nigeria
The Summer 2018 Intensive Advanced Yoruba Program was funded through the Fulbright-Hays grant which Howard University won for the 2018 cycle. The program took place at the Yoruba Language Center of the University of Ibadan, Nigeria. The group left the U.S. for Nigeria on June 13 and returned on August 8 after spending 8 weeks in the country. The program gave 12 participants a rare opportunity to get immersive education in Yoruba language and culture in Southwest Nigeria. The group met with Yoruba news outlets and were featured in Alaroye, a popular Yoruba newspaper. Each participant lived with a host family on the campus of the University of Ibadan, a cultural and linguistic city of native speakers. Participants received lectures from local instructors, interacted with natives, and visited different cultural and historical sites such as: Idanre Hill, Olumo Rock, Iseyin (to view aso ofi, traditional cloth weaving process), and Yoruba palaces. The director of the program in the U.S., Dr. Bayo Omolola of the Department of World Languages and Cultures at Howard, accompanied the group for the duration of the program with Professor. Kola Owolabi, Director of the Yoruba Language Center, who handled all local logistics.
