Welcome to FALA's New Dean: Jelenann Salyers!
We're Delighted to Introduce You to Jelenann Salyers!

Ms. Salyers is originally from Columbus, Ohio where she received a Bachelor of Science degree in Education from Ohio University. In Ohio, Ms. Salyers taught a variety of subjects and grade levels before moving west. Although still an avid Buckeye football fan, she made the journey out to sunny Arizona and settled in Casa Grande. In Casa Grande she taught for two years and was a member of various educational curriculum committees and programs. Ms. Salyers was also the Director and Head Coach for the Casa Grande High School Cheer and Competition Program. After a wonderful teaching experience in Casa Grande, Ms. Salyers moved to the Valley and became employed with Children First Academy of Tempe, a K- 8 school for the homeless and at risk youth where she spent four years as a middle grades teacher.

Ms. Salyers was a member of the Leadership Advisory Team and Mentor to new teachers at her school site, as well as a district wide facilitator and coach for professional development and National Common Core Standards trainer. Ms. Salyers has been recognized for earning various grants as well as recognition with the Worldwide Who's Who organization. While teaching Ms. Salyers obtained her Master's degree in Educational Leadership with a Principal K-12 emphasis at Northern Arizona University.

Ms. Salyers' philosophy of education is that when given a rigorous and challenging curriculum, a safe environment, love and support from staff, parents and the community, that all children can learn to the peak of their innate ability. Ms. Salyers is excited to begin her journey with the magnificent staff and wonderful students and families as the Dean at Flagstaff Arts and Leadership Academy.

Catching Up!
Catching Up with Alumnus Caleb Eckert!

Caleb Eckert (Class of 2013) is attending Haverford College. Caleb took an environmental anthropology class last semester, which piqued his interest and he's now considering an anthropology major and an environmental studies minor. Along with a small group of other Haverford students, Caleb is organizing a campaign of fundraising and advocacy for the nonprofit Partners In Health, that works for equitable health care for the poor.

Caleb works at Haverford's library in the Digital Scholarship Program as the Design & Media Assistant, where he provides support/office hours for faculty and students seeking to integrate media into their academic endeavors. He's also part of the Re:Humanities Working Group, which is a conference organized by and for undergrads doing academic work with new media. On the side, he's the tech guy for a college news web journal called "FreshPress".

Caleb co-created two experimental short documentaries: "Two Phone Calls" and "A Sample". "Two Phone Calls" was shown at the Tri-Co Film Festival this year. He has also been making video recordings for a few musician friends for auditions. This summer, Caleb is interning as a photo assistant for John Burcham, a photographer in the area who is part of the National Geographic Creatives team and does some pretty cool freelance work.
