Hogg Happenings
A Message From Our Principal...

This afternoon all of our students watched Screenagers, and then participated in small group discussions about the documentary.  For those of you who are not familiar with the film, here is a synopsis from Common Sense Media:

It explores how teens interact with each other using electronic devices (smartphones, computers, social media, etc.) and looks at whether parents can -- or should -- try to limit or control this behavior. Many experts share their thoughts on the topics the movie covers, which include tech addiction, violent video games (some clips from the games are shown), digital citizenship, and more.

The discussions following the movie were powerful and thought provoking! Sensing that students were ripe to open up during the discussion, one teacher polled her class of 26-6th graders.  The shocking results are below:

  • 18 of 26 kids reported they would be up all night during the weekends on their game console, tablet, or phone.
  • 4 of 26 kids believe their parents know how much time they spend on their devices.
  • 3 of 26 kids report their parents take their phone and/or device from them at night.
  • 23 of the remaining 23 kids wish their parents would take their phone/device from them at night.
  • 15 of 26 kids know their parents will check the history on their phone/device.
  • 11 of the remaining 15  admit to deleting their history and/or deleting apps that they are not allowed to use and then reloading them.

Electronic devices are powerful and our kids want limits!  Please take the time to talk with your kids this weekend about their device usage.  Here is a link to additional resources on this topic: http://www.nclnet.org/parental_controls_managing_children_s_wireless_usage.  I would like to give a special thank you to the Hogg PTA and Christine Cullen for making the viewing of Screenagers possible.

Sincerely,
Angela Sugarek

Staff Member of the Week
Ms. Cindy Cavazos
Ms. Cindy Cavazos, Hogg M.S. Secretary, is our Staff Member of the Week because she exhibits the IB learner profile trait of KNOWLEDGEABLE.

Ms. Cavazos was chosen for this honor because she has a  conceptual understanding of many different positions here at Hogg M.S., and she still continues to gain knowledge across a range of disciplines. She engages with issues and ideas that have local and global significance. Ms. Cavazos has been a part of the Razorback family for 16 years! She started as a Teaching Assistant in 2001, and soon after became the Attendance Clerk. She became the Student Information Management Specialist in 2004, and was promoted to School Secretary in 2006.  She has worked with 6 principals, and she feels fortunate to have such an important role. Ms. Cavazos loves being at Hogg M.S. because it feels like a family and everyone collaborates. Not only does she enjoy working with her fellow co-workers, but the parents and students are very special to her, too. She mentioned that being in so many roles has helped her be a leader with the administrative assistant team. She likes giving them advice and being their mentor. Ms. Cavazos is happy at Hogg M.S. and she loves working with Ms. Sugarek!

She loves traveling, especially to the beaches in Mexcio. She also enjoys cooking Each weekend, she makes sure that she gets together with her family and friends. Ms. Cavazos is an avid Houston sports fan, and loves going to all of the professional games. Lastly, she is very passionate about the Houston Rodeo and she never misses the BBQ Cook-Off!
Student of the Week
Izaih Charles - 7th Grader
Izaih Charles, Hogg M.S. 7th Grader, is our Student of the Week because he exhibits the IB learner profile trait of RISK TAKER.

Izaih is being highlighted because he approaches uncertainty with forethought and determination. He works independently and cooperatively to explore new ideas and innovative strategies. He is also resourceful and resilient in the face of challenges and change. Izaih's favorite subjects are Language & Literature because he is fond of scary stories and loves writing mysteries, Science because he likes experiments and learning about how he can change things in the future, and Individual & Societies because it gives a perspective on how life happened in the past. He has been a Mission Squash Scholar for two years, and enjoys playing the game because it was a new sport that he could learn. Izaih says his mom encourages him to always try new things that could lead to a brighter future. In addition, he is a percussionist in the Concert Band. He started out playing the trumpet, but chose to switch to percussion because he felt like it was a better fit.

When Izaih is not at school, he enjoys playing with his little brother and sister. He has recently trained for and completed the BP MS 150 which is a two-day fundraising bike ride organized by the National MS Society, South Central Chapter. He said the ride was easy, but the elements (temperature and wind) made it difficult. He completed the race with his mom and cousin DJ, who he looks up to. They have done the race for 6 and 4 years, respectively, and he was inpsired by both of them and wanted them to be proud of him. He plans to do it again next year, and says he will tweak his training a bit hoping he can train in some colder weather. When he’s not riding his bike, he loves to read comics, scary stories and adventures. He plays baseball and chess every once in a while. He likes to play tag with his dog Buttercup. When there’s nothing else to do, he said you can usually find him watching Netflix movies.
