Workshop on Women Entrepreneurs and Sustainable Energy in Africa

wPOWER  was pleased to join the United Nations University (UNU-GEST), UN Environment, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs Iceland, UN Women and  Pan African Climate Justice Agency at a workshop on “Women’s Entrepreneurship on Sustainable Energy”. The event was held in Libreville, Gabon during the sixteenth session of the African Ministerial Conference on Environment (AMCEN) from June 13-14 2017.

The workshop released the "Libreville outcome statement on women entrepreneurs and sustainable energy in Africa".  The outcome was also incorporated in the AMCEN Declaration adopted during the Ministerial segment plenary session during the event.  Click here for the workshop report .

In the last few months, wPOWER has been developing an advocacy strategy. This strategy is an overarching framework for influencing the creation of an enabling environment for the uptake of clean energy, where women play a prominent role across the value chain. The wPOWER advocacy strategy will be shared publicly in the coming few weeks.

The advocacy strategy will take a multi-pronged approach to ensure:
  • - Increased awareness and attention of the issue among key audiences.
  • - Establish thought leadership across the sector.
  • - Outreach and networking.
  • - Influence policy makers


 
In an effort to further catalyze the use of clean cookstoves and fuels, the Global Alliance has launched the  "BCC Resource Hub”a global database of behavior change communication materials. 
Solaris Offgrid, the pay-as-you-go solar energy company has  raised more than Euros 1 million  to expand operations in new developing countries, including Africa, India and South East Asia.

Smart solar solutions is working on improving energy access and empowering refugee communities in Kenya.

New support from the African Development Bank and the Climate Investment Funds, will provide support to Liberia to advance the  advance the renewable energy sector.
Empowering women is crucial to a range of environmental concerns, including climate change.
