Employer Perspective

Building Your Professional Network.  By Lorie Davis '98M, assistant director, University Relations, Shippensburg University
 
 

Whether you graduated 2 years, 12 years or 20 years ago, knowing how to create a professional network should not be overlooked. Given how the economic climate has significantly changed over the past 2 years it is even more imperative.  

Follow these ideas to build your professional network:

  • Don't overlook people you already know. Start your list with: parents of children on your child's sports team, college friends, past faculty members, previous employers, your parent's friends, people you met through other people or other activities. Create your list of people and begin to spread the word about your career goals.
  • Connect back with your alma mater, Shippensburg University. Use the internet to connect with many other Shippensburg alumni through LinkedIn Alumni groups!  LinkedIn is a career-oriented social networking tool and alumni on this site are looking to connect with other alumni for career purposes. There are also excellent Facebook Alumni groups however these have a more social perspective.

Analytical Recovery Auditor, Footlocker, Inc.

The incumbent hired into the Recovery Auditor role will be responsible for analyzing contract and payment information to determine compliance, identify potential recovery opportunities and collect monies due the company. Research, analyze, document and deliver cost recoveries in retail areas and applications such as logistics, technical information, service applications, and financial transactions. Review technical contracts and payment information to identify noncompliance and possible overcharges. Document, investigate and collect money from property claims, contract audits and special audits as assigned by management. Provide recovery and savings information to management. Audit and test payments for accuracy according to established guidelines and provide feedback. Identify and assist in the implementation of process improvements for assigned areas using Access. Analyze current and past data using excel and various reporting tools. Prepare detailed reports of audit findings and submit reports as requested. Requires a Bachelor's Degree in Accounting, Business or Finance and a minimum of 2 years of related experience; 2 years Auditing experience a plus. StrategyEmployer Perspective: Building Your Professional Network

 

  • Join a professional association that caters to people in your career field. This is a very effective way to meet other professionals in your line of work and a great place to meet potential employers.
  •  Attend local Chamber of Commerce events or volunteer with an organization in your town. The people you meet by engaging in these types of activities might not have the same career goals as you but they might know someone that could be helpful to you. You never want to discount the potential of someone in your network.
  • Ask every person that you know or develop a relationship with for referrals. Simply ask "Is there anyone else that you know that might be helpful for me to talk to?"  By phrasing the question this way people will feel more comfortable giving you referrals for information gathering rather than if you are asking for a job.
