Using social media in the job search used to be an unknown concept to many people. Just a few short years ago, some  voiced their concern about having employers on Facebook. Well, it's 2012 and times have changed. Companies, recruiters and savvy job seekers are all engaging online. Here are 13 easy ways to incorporate social media into your job search, and start connecting and networking today!

 

Facebook & LinkedIn  

  1. Connect with SHIP - our alma mater is already posting career advice, sharing announcements, listing important event details, and more via the general university and alumni pages.
  2. "Like" companies - read what they are posting, see what other people are saying about them, and ask questions. Some companies have general corporate pages, as well as career-related pages.
  3. Connect with recruiters - there are corporate and agency recruiters who post links to blogs and career articles, share information on their company and jobs, and who will answer your questions.
  4. Join LinkedIn groups - the Shippensburg University group, as well as job search, corporate and industry groups are relatively active and include job postings. Engage in discussions, network with members, and receive updates on career opportunities.
  5. Ask questions - join online conversations with employers, recruiters and other professionals via the Facebook pages of sites such as Brazen Careerist, Careerealism, AfterCollege and New Grad Life.

  1. Corporate channels showcase what it's like to work there. Peek inside the walls of organizations that interest you, get more information on the company, see the work environment and hear from employees.
  2. See jobs before you apply - channels like youtube.com/ JobsinPods, SeetheJobdotcom, and Job are resources where you can learn more about companies, jobs, interviewing and making your resume stand out.

Twitter

  1. If you're just getting started on Twitter, be sure to follow @shippensburgu and @ship_alumni.
  2. Search for jobs using hashtags like #hiring, #ITjobs, #PAjobs, #salesjobs, #entrylevel and #jobs.
  3. Many student organizations tweet valuable information to current and alumni members, including networking events and job announcements.
  4. Like on Facebook, employers and recruiters are tweeting career advice, links to articles, job openings, career fair dates, and answering your questions (all in 140 characters or less).
  5. Attend job chats to interact live with recruiters and company representatives. Often times they will ask you to tweet your LinkedIn URL (so make sure your profile is complete and up-to-date).
  6. Job sites are tweeting thousands of geo-targeted openings each day. Consider following Monster Careers, CareerBuilder, TweetaJob and #TweetMyJobs.
