Professional Service Marketing, Building Relationships and Personal Connections

Written by Heather Sweitzer, CPSM, Class of 2004

Manager, Marketing & Business Development, Dawood Engineering

"How did you end up here?" is the question I'm often asked when I tell people that I'm in marketing and business development for an engineering firm. As a Shippensburg Alum with a Political Science background, it's not quite the career path that was originally laid out in my mind, but it has fostered a successful career with a bright future.

Professional Services Marketing is a niche that is not often taught or talked about in classroom settings. Our industry of Architects, Engineering, and Construction (A/E/C) is often laid out with two separate domains of marketing (branding, brochures, public relations, social media, etc) and business development (the one-on-one sales contact with a client or prospect). Those of us in the marketing department are often tasked with projects like developing proposals for potential work, writing marketing plans and budgets, planning events, or attending conferences. Just like the position, the needs of our fast-paced industry and clients change on a daily basis.

Although my liberal arts education gave me a strong base in communication, organizational behavior, and critical thinking, the remainder of my education has come from work experiences, volunteering on non-profit boards and organizations, and through the Society for Marketing Professional Services (SMPS). My past work experience has given me a chance to build a network of peers and professional acquaintances, which is essential for business development. SMPS National has a specific certification, the Certified Professional Services Marketer (CPSM), which has been invaluable to my continued marketing education. Investing in yourself and building your professional skills does not end with your bachelor's degree.

My education at Shippensburg has led me to be involved in specific projects related to local governments, specifically grant applications and administration and economic development. For any professional services path that you may find yourself following, I encourage you to get involved in your community, meet and engage people to build your network, and continue to build upon your resume.
