Conducting a Strategic Job Search

Many individuals don't know how to conduct a strategic job search. Most recent grads and those with more experience will spend hours scouring the internet and pouring over too large job board sites with little to no result. Prepare yourself to search first and then seek out  the multitude of other ways to search for jobs besides using Monster and Indeed. To receive more detailed explanations of the concepts below contact alumni@ship.edu and request the alumni job search tool kit.

Conducting a Strategic Job Search

  1. Determine & Select Your Targets: Select or target a job market by determining a geographic area, an inductry or company size, and a job function within that industry.
  2. Develop your Personal Brand & Understand Your Value to an Organization: A personal brand will make you stand out from the crowd of job seekers by differentiating yourself from others with the same skills and abilities.  Include in your personal brand, your experiences, your skills, your personal characteristics and your accomplishments.
  3. Refine the Basic: Your Resume & Your Cover Letter (next month's newsletter will review cover letter information):  The cover letter should be a brief letter that clearly articulates your reason for writing and your skills and abilities. Don't reiterate what they can read on your resume. Point out skills they might not notice or accomplishments that might catch their attention.
  4. Find Positions Within Your Targeted Area:  Network; Direct Contact of Companies; Employer Websites; Search Firms, Head Hunter, 3rd Party Recruiters; Ship Career Connection; Professional Association Websites; Specialized Career Job Search Websites; On-line Classified Ads; LinkedIn and Twitter.

Note: The most strategic and successful job search will use all of the components above. You simply can't rely on one avenue to search for a job. Be certain to spend time exploring each way of searching for positions and be realistic with your time. It is more important to spend time networking and contacting companies directly rather than searching the large job bank boards. Use your time wisely but explore all options.
