Tips for Making the Most of a Job Fair

It would be worth attending one of the upcoming job fairs this fall to search for employment. Job fairs are excellent opportunities to meet with employers and get yourself and your skills recognized. Read through a few of the top tips from career professionals and employers to make the most of your time when attending the fair.

  • Know who you are and have a focused direction prior to attending the job fair. Be able to speak about what you want.
  • Be prepared to ask questions about their company and the positions available. Do research ahead of time about the employers who will be in attendance.
  • Express excitement (and smile) about the opportunity to interact with the employer-even if they don't have an opportunity you are interested in at this time. You never know when they may open up new positions.
  • Have several copies of you updated, error free resume available for distribution.
  • Do not leave the fair without at least speaking with 7-10 employers.
  • Follow-up after the fair is important. Ask for business cards; Then write thank you letters.
  • Make sure to collect promotional and contact information from the representative if you are interested in pursuing involvement with a specific organization.

There is a misconception about job fairs. Some believe that they are not valuable when searching for employment because employers tell candidates to apply online. However, job fairs are excellent avenues to network and learn about the company. Yes, you may be directed to the company website to complete the online application but many recruiters will still take your resume at the job fair or make note of your name. If you make a good impression, they will check to make sure you applied online as directed and they will move your application to the top for an interview.
