Take your Resume from Good to Great.
By Shannon (Hatfield) Smedstad '99, Employment brand & HR social media manager at GEICO.

When it comes to writing a resume, there are common "mistakes" that people make. Based on my many years in recruiting... here are some top tips for articulating your awesomeness on a single piece of paper:

  1. Think about what makes you different from all other candidates. Why should someone hire you over them? Put that information on your resume.
  2. Highlight your accomplishments, not menial tasks. Think about everything you've done throughout your career and include your achievements, chronologically by company.
  3. Quantify your results when possible. How much did you save? How many people do you manage?
  4. If you have information about your successes online, link to them. You can link to your blog, portfolio or LinkedIn profile; this allows recruiters to see your work and recommendations.
  5. One resume does not fit all. If you want a specific job at a specific company, tailor your resume to that opportunity.

And, here are some quick tips on what not to include. Do not:

  1.  Include marital status, DOB, SSN or photo unless it's specifically required.
  2. Write "References Available upon Request" at the bottom. It's archaic and a waste of space.
  3. Have a resume that's more than two pages long, in most cases.
  4. Include hobbies unless they directly relate to the type of position you desire.
  5. Use company jargon; use verbiage that your average recruiter can understand.

Most recruiters spend less than one minute scanning candidates' resumes! You have to sell your skills and abilities in a way that's also easy to read. If you need help with your resume, there's a lot of free information online and the SHIP Alumni Career Services office can help, too.
