SCANLAN SUMMER 2020 NEWSLETTER
Dear Alumni and Friends,

I pray that this newsletter finds you and your family safe and in good health.

During these most difficult times, the Scanlan Administration, Faculty, Staff and Board members, remain highly focused on Academics, Recruitment, Fundraising and Facilities. We are proud of what we have accomplished and of the countless successes of our students, and we are confident that we will all come out on the other side of this crisis stronger and more determined than ever.

Monsignor Scanlan High School is succeeding!
  • 98% of our seniors graduate, with nearly all attending the college of their choice
  • Our seniors are receiving significant college scholarship awards
  • Our students are learning at a high level with increased AP & Honors classes and through the continuation of the Amazon sponsored STEM Program
  • Our students are embracing community service and making a difference in the lives of others
  • Our students are happy and find their second home at Scanlan - on a safe, expansive and revitalized campus
  • Our freshman class enrollments have increased steadily for the past 5 years
  • The 15-year Charter School lease provides us with a much-needed, guaranteed income
  • Our alumni and friends are listening to our needs and supporting our students through generous scholarship donations & sponsorships
  • The 70+ year mission of our founder, Msgr. Arthur J. Scanlan, continues to influence and inspire all of us

I am privileged and blessed to work at Scanlan. In my eight years here I have formed relationships with amazing young men and women who continue to be educated by dedicated teachers, who are instilling in their students the importance of character, integrity, compassion and service to others. And today’s Scanlan students recognize and appreciate the sacrifices and choices their families are willing to make to send them to Catholic school.

The substantial decrease in our tuition revenue and the cancellation of fundraising events continues to adversely affect us. Scanlan is a community
in need and we must look to our alumni and friends for financial assistance during these unpredictable times. Every gift, no matter what size, will help Scanlan navigate through and beyond this crisis and positively impact the future of our school. THIS IS YOUR SCHOOL, and we need your help so that we can continue to make a significant difference in the lives of our students.

I am sure you will agree that these times are daunting in many ways, but our Scanlan community never ceases to demonstrate kindness, compassion and support towards one another. I deeply value my relationship with all of you, and will continue to keep you informed on all that is happening at Scanlan Feel free to contact me anytime should you have any questions, concerns or suggestions. Please stay safe, stay well and stay in touch!

Sincerely,

Karen Gennarelli

CARES ACT PROVIDES CHARITABLE GIVING INCENTIVES FOR DONORS TO NONPROFIT ORGANIZATIONS
The CARES Act, signed into law on March 27th, creates charitable giving incentives for donors to 501(c)(3) nonprofit organizations. Section 2204 of the CARES Act allows those who no longer itemize on their tax return, and instead take the standard deduction, the ability to make a tax deductible gift up to $300.00. The incentive applies to contributions made in 2020 and would be claimed on tax forms next year!
OUR SINCEREST THANKS TO THOSE WHO RESPONDED TO
OUR SPRING DIGITAL NEWSLETTER. WE HAVE RECEIVED
$34,850 IN DONATIONS TO ASSIST US DURING THIS
CORONAVIRUS PANDEMIC, BUT MUCH MORE IS NEEDED!

WE URGE ALL OF OUR ALUMNI TO PLEASE STEP UP
AND SUPPORT US DURING THESE DIFFICULT TIMES.
NO GIFT IS TOO SMALL.
...AND WE CONTINUE TO BE BLESSED
  • On March 16th - we instituted remote learning. We had previously mobilized, and the policies and procedures our Principal had implemented created a seamless transition during this period.
  • Through the hard work of our teachers, students and parents, our remote learning was extremely effective. Our seniors have completed their studies, graduated and as of June 12th, all of our students have completed their studies for this school year.
  • With no students on campus, our maintenance staff has been hard at work upgrading classrooms, halls and our campus grounds (see story below)
  • All of our students, faculty and staff continue to be safe and healthy!
But we are still missing one another!!

THE 68TH ANNUAL SCANLAN COMMENCEMENT
IS VIEWED BY ALL
On June 12th, our Scanlan seniors, families, friends, faculty, staff and Board members were invited to view the virtual graduation of our
Class of 2020! It was not the graduation ceremony our students and their families had envisioned after four years at Scanlan, but it was a heartfelt celebration that brought tears to the eyes of many.
Valedictorian, Nana Achampong, and Salutatorian, Oluwatosin Williams, spoke to their Scanlan classmates from their homes, inspiring them and acknowledging that their Class of 2020 will always be remembered for having "virtually" graduated.
--------------------
Our Class of 2020 graduates will be driving on to the Scanlan campus on June 29th to pick up their diplomas. Scanlan faculty, staff and Board members will be there - as socially distanced honor guards -

KOBY BREA, CLASS OF 2020
HELPING FAMILIES DURING COVID-19
Scholarship recipient, Koby Brea, is excited to be heading to the University of Dayton in the fall. But before he starts packing for college, Koby has been packing food care packages for Uplift NYC. Uplift NYC is a non-profit organization that has been providing food to New Yorkers who are having trouble filling their pantries and putting food on their tables during these difficult times. Uplift NYC has been encouraged by all the volunteers who have been working hard to keep their operation afloat. Many of them are young people, just like Koby, who wanted to make a difference in their neighborhood!
SPORTS
COACH DINKINS SINGS THE PRAISES OF HIS
CLASS OF 2020 TRACK TEAM ATHLETES
Five student athletes from the Scanlan Track Team have graduated with honors. They are Nana Achampong, who will be attending NYU, Joel John, who will be attending NYIT, Andreas Vlahos, who will also be attending NYIT, Joseph Webster, who will be attending Lehman College and Jordan Providence, who will be attending Iona College.
Coach Dinkins reminds all of us that student athletes are required to find balance in their lives at a much younger age. They learn how to multi-task and work with others as a team to accomplish their goals. Coach Dinkins is so very proud of these Class of 2020 athletes who practiced hard, studied hard, competed hard and achieved and maintained high Grade Point Averages.

THANKS COACH DINKINS FOR YOUR DEDICATION AND FOR THE DIFFERENCE YOU MAKE IN OUR
STUDENTS' LIVES!
A COACHING CHANGE FOR THE SCANLAN GIRLS' VARSITY BASKETBALL TEAM
After eight exciting seasons of coaching girls basketball at Monsignor Scanlan High School, Head Coach Tom Catalanotto has resigned and will be heading across the bridge to Holy Cross High School in Flushing to coach their 1st-ever Girls' Varsity Basketball Team. Mercedes Dukes '02, a top basketball player for Scanlan, and Assistant Coach to Catalanotto for the past eight years, has been officially named Head Coach of the varsity team!
Tom is proud of all that he accomplished at Scanlan and said that very few opportunities could have made him decide to leave Scanlan.
As for Mercedes, she feels her time as a player and assistant coach under Catalanotto has prepared her for this next chapter. And she is very excited and looking forward to representing her alma mater in the highest position possible.

THANKS TO TOM CATALANOTTO FOR HIS TENURE AT SCANLAN AND CONGRATULATIONS TO NEW HEAD COACH
MERCEDES DUKES!
