SMSDC News                               January 2018
From the President's Desk

Happy New Year and welcome to a prosperous 2018!

It h as always been the intent of the Southwest Minority Supplier Development Council, an affiliate of the National Minority Supplier Development Council(NMSDC) to be very focused on certifying, developing, connecting and advocating for our minority-owned businesses. Minority owned businesses have demonstrated although initially small in number, we become an economic powerhouse when we collaborate and connect. To continue to equip our MBEs with the tools needed for their future success, the SMSDC team is working diligently on our 2018 Calendar of Events.  Each local Regional Task Force (RTF) is preparing events and workshops filled with educational & networking opportunities.

On Thursday, January 18th the San Antonio area Regional Task Force will host their 2018 kick-off event.  Debbie Trevino with Treco Services will discuss her experience participating & winning the 2017 MBE Idol.  She will give her insight on why you should participate in the upcoming 2018 MBE Idol.  Renee Watson, Director with Bexar County, will discuss on "How to do Business with Bexar County."

On Monday, January 22nd, the El Paso' area Regional Task Force will host their 2018 kick-off event where Beatriz Fernandez with DataXport will present her vision and ask for your support to be elected as SMSDC's MBEIC Chair in the upcoming elections.

On Monday, February 5th, the Austin area Regional Task Force will host their 2018 kick-off event. Additional details forthcoming.

Registration for each of the RTF events mentioned is available on our website, www.smsdc.org.

Our Annual Stakeholder's Meeting will take place on Tuesday, February 20th at the Toyota Motor Manufacturing Texas facility in San Antonio, TX.  As an SMSDC Stakeholder, please join us for this annual event to collaborate, discuss barriers & successes and plan for a better 2018.  The MBEIC Chair position is up for re-election in 2018.  The MBEIC Chair leads the Minority Business
Entrepreneur Committee (MBEIC), whom is committed to being an agent of change. The committee assists SMSDC in recruiting and retaining minority business entrepreneurs and helps inform MBEs on how to do business with corporate America. The committee formulates and conducts innovative
workshops for MBEs to learn the necessary business disciplines in creating expansion and growth
opportunities through forging strategic alliances, joint venturing, and market positioning within existing business models.

Voting ballots will be distributed to all Certified MBEs for on site voting during the annual meeting. After the meeting, all Stakeholder's are invited to take a tour of the Toyota plant.  If you have not taken this tour in the past, this is your chance!   Advance registration is necessary for the tours and we do not want you to be left out. Please note, high heels are strongly discouraged. Please be sure to have a pair of flats to change into prior to going on the tour. Stay tuned for additional details regarding the Annual Stakeholder's Meeting coming soon! To register, please click here now.

And please save the dates of October 14-17, 2018 for NMSDC's 2018 Conference & Business Opportunity Fair, which will be held at the Austin Convention Center in downtown Austin, Texas.  Planning officially kicked off on December 6th in Austin, TX during a Meet-and-Greet event.  I would like to personally thank the corporate members and certified MBEs who were able to join us in the Meet-and-Greet event.  Your thoughts and ideas that were shared at the event were very much invaluable. We hope you will become further involved by serving as our partners in creating an exciting event full of learning, networking and entertainment opportunities. As more information is provided about the upcoming opportunity fair, it will be distributed.

We encourage all of our MBEs to take full advantage of the above opportunities and make those critical connections, essential to growing their bottom line. In addition to attending the RTF networking events in your area and conferences, utilize the MBE to MBE portal, which is included in your certification to expand your access to potential contracts to help you grow your business. We so often hear from our MBEs, I never thought of connecting with another MBE. I was so busy trying to connect with "big dogs" I overlooked the tremendous value add of getting in on the ground floor with another MBE who was interested in partnering with me.

We look forward to seeing you at many of our upcoming events in 2018.

Sincerely,
President/CEO

The Importance of NOT Letting your
SMSDC Certification Expire!

We frequently receive frustrating calls by our MBEs telling us their SMSDC/HUB Certification has expired. Once your SMSDC certification expires, ALL MBEs have to begin the entire certification process from the beginning. Please note, WE NO LONGER ACCEPT PAPER APPLICATIONS. ALL certification is now done on-line. There are no exceptions.

For those MBEs in the STATE OF TEXAS, in addition to beginning the entire certification process all over again, the HUB certification, which enables you to bid on contracts, is no longer valid. The HUB certification process is only done once a month. This means for those MBEs in the State of Texas, they will now have to wait an entire month for their HUB certification.

Please make sure to check the expiration date on your SMSDC certification. You will receive an e-mail notification from the AdaptOne portal which looks similar to the image above.

DO NOT ignore this e-mail. It is a courtesy reminder your certification is about to expire.
Please contact Michelle Veloz at
[email protected] .

Improving Your Relationship with Money in 2018

Michael F. Kay, Contributor
Forbes.com

The turning of the calendar year is traditionally a time when you feel inspired by the possibilities of a new start, a new beginning, and the onset of positive change. It can be a time that is empowering, energetic and life supporting; it can forever alter the trajectory towards a more successful money life.
But like any change, you want to consider the good, the bad, the ugly, and importantly, the challenges that transitions can bring.

You can conquer your transition by distilling it down to key essential components:
1. As Simon Sinek says, "Start with Why". Understand not only why change is beneficial to your life but also that the outcomes are so powerful and important that no other choice remains. Begin with a declaration.
For example: I must become debt-free within the next 12 months; or
I must accumulate X dollars to go towards a down payment on a home, or
We must open and fund a college savings program for my child by February 1.
You get the drill; it's about why, in your heart and mind, something must occur. These are known as your "Money Musts".

2. The second step is to get a handle on where you are right now. If your "must" is to pay off your credit cards, then you have to know exactly how much money you owe, to whom, and how much money you have to reduce the debt. Using credit card debt as the example, you might need to tighten your belt and alter some of your spending decisions to a greater or lesser degree. If paying off the cards is so important, ask yourself what you're willing to do to make that happen!
