Teaching children to read since 2003!

Reading Power is in the middle of another successful, exciting school year. Our students read and write every day while taking adventures through the literary world with Danny the Dog, Bella & Rosie, and their caring volunteer tutors. Kids and tutors alike feel the magic of learning within each of our Reading Power classrooms. Last week, one of our students exclaimed, "I love books!" as he arrived at tutoring, and our January assessments show that our students are on track with their accelerated literacy progress. Thank you to everyone - volunteers, donors, and supporters - who makes Reading Power possible each year.
~Rebecca Mullen, MSEd, Executive Director of Programs

Mission Statement:  Reading Power is a literacy tutoring program serving low-achieving children attending elementary schools. Our mission is to accelerate children's literacy learning and to develop in them a love of reading and writing. We accomplish this goal through an independent tutoring program working in partnership with schools. We believe that all children deserve to reach their intellectual potential.

Reading Power Kicks Off Pre-kindergarten Pilot Program

The reopening of Green Bay Elementary School as Green Bay Early Childhood Center provided the opportunity for Reading Power to address an additional part of our mission: to provide quality, one-to-one literacy tutoring to our youngest North Chicago students - intervening even earlier before some children begin to fall behind. Thanks to the generosity of the United Way of Lake County's Women's Leadership Committee, a seed grant was donated to pilot a pre-kindergarten, push-in program in two classrooms. The curriculum, developed by Rebecca Mullen, MSEd, Executive Director of Programs, and Mary Jane Hender, EdD, co-founder and board member, is rooted in accelerated oral language development through quality literature led by a trained Reading Power volunteer tutor. As with all of our curricula, our methods are research-based, developmentally appropriate, and individualized for each student. The teachers and tutors are witnesses to the daily successes and excitement each child brings to the tutoring session. Tutoring within the classroom instead of in our own classroom is new to Reading Power. For this age level,  all students participate in rich, one-to-one discussions with our trained, volunteer tutors to accelerate oral language development through quality, interactive literature. Our pre-k pilot program is being led by Mullen and new professional tutor, Joy McGreevy.

"I am excited to be a part of our new pre-k program. The kids are smart and so receptive to the books and literacy discussions. It's obvious we're already making a huge impact with our youngest students.

Thank you, Donors!

On behalf of our board, staff, and students, I want to wholeheartedly thank all of our generous individual donors, foundations, civic organizations, faith-based communities, and corporate donors for their new or ongoing support. We are humbled by and proud of the response we have had this year to our annual appeal. We were fortunate to have two generous donors matching all new and increased donations this year. Fundraising is crucial to providing the Reading Power program to our students. Your gifts enable our students to reach their intellectual potential. Thank
you

Longtime Reading Power Tutor Shares Special Story
For the tenth year I find myself escorting a very small, often toothless, sometimes shy, student down the school hallway and into the Reading Power classroom. And for the tenth year I ask myself again, is this an efficient way for me to spend my volunteer hours?

As a retired Social Worker, I have a fairly low tolerance for programs or services that I think condescend to the folks they set out to help. We at Reading Power are here to enable our students, not make them dependent upon us. We want to give them the tools to help them become effective readers, and then we hope they will take those tools and build a lifetime of successes - in and out of the classroom. Is that too ambitious? I decided to ask two of my former Reading Power students what they think.

Edwin and Becky are brother and sister in 9th and 6th grades, respectively. I have kept in touch with them and their family since I met Edwin back in first grade. Here's what Edwin wrote when I asked what his memories of Reading Power were.
"Before I joined Reading Power, I struggled with reading, spelling and comprehension. When I first started the program, I was put into a new environment but I adjusted quickly thanks to the volunteers who made me feel comfortable with kind words and encouragement. The volunteers there helped me with reading, writing, vocabulary and plenty more. I believe Reading Power helped me get where I am today."

Becky also mentioned the tutors as an essential part of the program.
"I loved it when the tutors switched every day because I got to meet new people. They showed me many strategies and helped me focus when I was reading. Kids used to say I only go to Reading Power so I can skip class, but I always say, "No, I go there to read." The best thing that Reading Power did was it helped me learn to read."

The words of my friends, Edwin and Becky, reassure me that the Reading Power program, which keeps me on  my toes intellectually, challenges me, and provides me with opportunities to meet new people, young and old, really does impact the lives of the children we walk down that hall and into the magical Reading Power classroom.
