RETIN-A
NUMBER ONE SECRET TO GREAT SKIN
(other than sunscreen!) When Retin-A, a form of topical Vitamin A, was first used on acne patients in the mid 1980's, patients reported their skin felt smoother and less wrinkled after the treatment. Since then the field has proliferated to the point where there are currently more than 2,000 new Retin-A type products.
These products generally resemble Vitamin A in structure and have been shown to work on environmentally damaged skin by exfoliating the superficial epidermal cells and encouraging new ones to form. Recent evidence seems to indicate that this class of products also plays a role in the prevention of aging.
Because UV light inactivates these molecules, they are most effective when used at night.
Retin-A in some form should be one of the cornerstones of good skin care. We often recommend Retrinal by Avene. Research papers show a "significant' increase in epidermal thickness and elasticity when using this product. Because of its formulation, it is usually well-tolerated by most patients. We nevertheless take the time to select the correct strength, instruct each patient in its proper use, and monitor its good effects.
And, of course, your skin should be protected on a daily basis with a complete UV-A/UV-B blocking sunscreen for maximum effectiveness of all the products you use.

DRY SKIN ANTIDOTE
 Being in the skin biz with the Doc for as long as I have, I am nevertheless still amazed at the frequency of dry skin problems. It is the most common patient complaint and these hot, dry summer days do nothing to alleviate the problem.
It's almost paradoxical, but in an effort to conserve the moisture in the skin, the outer layer of epidermis actually becomes thicker. The unfortunate consequence is that the skin becomes even more impermeable to products. It's for that reason that the best approach for correcting dry skin begins with our Signature Anti-aging Facial Skin Treatment with Dermal Planing. The dermal planing gently but thoroughly removes the outer layer of dead cells. This allows products to penetrate more effectively and even allows makeup to go on more smoothly. BELOTERO BALANCE

Aesthetic Medicine's Newest Wrinkle Filler
Don't be dismayed if you haven't heard of it yet. BELOTERO BALANCE is the newest wrinkle filler to be FDA-approved although it's already been in use in Europe for a decade. Manufactured by Merz, makers of RADIESSE, BELOTERO BALANCE is a hyaluronic acid-based wrinkle filler which places it in the same family as Juvederm, Restylane, and Perlane.
What's different is the so-called cross-linking of the molecule which enables it to be used very close to the surface of the skin. It is perfect for those very fine lines on the lower third of the cheek as well as in the deep crow's feet. Ordinary fillers have little effect on these areas but our experience with BELOTERO BALANCE indicates they can be removed almost as effectively as if they had been erased.
