May 4,2017 HBUP held its annual Lunch and Learn featuring Dr. Julia Alber, MPH, PhD, focusing on how to utilize social media for health education and engage Vietnamese and Chinese aged 19-29 in hepatitis awareness and health messaging. The event also featured a #JustB storyteller, M.D. See her story here. HBUP honored Professor. Ray Lum, with the “Hep B Hero Award” for his extensive efforts to reduce health disparities including hepatitis B in Asian and Pacific Islander Communities throughout Philadelphia.

Think about the Link Philadelphia Summit

In partnership with Prevent Cancer Foundation, the Philadelphia Department of Public Health, and FIGHT Philadelphia, HBUP hosted a Think About the Link Summit to create awareness on the link between hepatitis B, C and liver cancer. The event featured notable presentations from Dr. Edith Mitchell (need to include credentials for all speakers listed here), Alex Sheriffs of the Philadelphia Health Department and our own Catherine Freeland. Councilman David Oh, a longtime supporter of hepatitis awareness events presented a resolution letter marking Hepatitis Awareness Month in the city of Philadelphia.

This month provided over 40 hepatitis B screenings in the African immigrant and Vietnamese communities and educational sessions on hepatitis B. Jefferson APAMSA students, volunteered to provide BMI, blood pressure, and blood glucose health screening for all participants.

In collaboration with the Association of Asian Pacific Community Health Organizations (AAPCHO) and National Viral Hepatitis Roundtable (NVHR) and Hepatitis Caucus the Hepatitis B Foundation successfully launched the Hep B Cure Campaign. Presentations featured Congesswoman Grace Meng (D-NY) and Dr. John Ward each speaking about the growing urgency and opportunity for curative therapies for hepatitis B and need for increased support and funding for hepatitis B.

Dragon Boat Regatta 2017

To raise awareness about hepatitis B, HBUP sponsored by Arbutus BioPharma participated in the Philadelphia Dragon Boat Regatta on June 3rd. Volunteers from Drexel University, Philadelphia College of Osteopathic Medicine, Philadelphia Department of Health, and Geisinger Commonwealth School of Medicine spent the day networking, and rowing for hepatitis B awareness. We have begin releasing a unique patient story for each coming month of 2017. Our #justB Storytelling Campaign is a national effort to bring individuals affected by hepatitis B to share their stories to shed light on this serious disease, decrease stigma, discrimination, and promote the importance of testing and treatment for hepatitis B.
