WANTED: Gardeners!

Growing season is here and with newly-installed irrigation, we are seeing abundant growth. That is good, for God's garden should be glorious. To maintain that beauty, weeders and pruners are needed. No experience necessary. If you can give an hour now and then, your help would be greatly appreciated. Call the office....please!  310-372-8445

God Helps Us Keep Moving

2013 Youth Seniors
Our 2013 Youth Group Graduating Seniors

There were many things I loved about worship on Youth Sunday, last week. It was so beautiful to see such a spirit of gratitude and joy, and to hear an invitation to thoughtful prayer, from our young people.

One of the moments of insight I am especially grateful for was a part of the message shared by one of our graduating Seniors, Brandon Collins. Brandon shared how he was aware of God's presence with him when he plays baseball. He named the way God helps him when he misses the play or has a bad at-bat--giving him strength to shake it off and keep moving.

It's sometimes tempting to call on God when we want to win--as if God being on our side would guarantee victory. Brandon noticed something else--that God's is with us, by our side, in it all. Claiming that gives us hope to keep going, knowing that our worth doesn't depend on any one "win," and knowing that there's always a beautiful future we're called to.

This isn't a lesson just for our youth--all of us need to be reminded of this, again and again, in the sorrows and triumphs of life.

May you feel God's strength and presence, and may it keep you moving onward!

with gratitude,

Pastor Molly

Led by the Spirit
Our congregational prayer project has begun.
You can find more information, including directions for the prayer practices, on our
website. We hope and trust that this will be a powerful and formative time for our life as a church, as we together lift our prayers to God.
Last Sunday, our youth led all our worship services, bringing a spirit-filled call to prayer and a beautiful message of grace. Thank you all our young leaders, and to the adults who work with them!
third grade beach day Third Grade Beach Day

The third graders, along with MIss Mele and Miss Kathy enjoyed a fun beach outing together before they move up to Church R' Us with Caroline.  A fun afternoon was had by all where we ate ice cream, reminisced about Sunday School and chatted about being the hands and feet of Christ.

Nicole Perlot Graduation

We're also really excited about Nicole Perlot's graduation from Mira Costa. She will also be graduating from our Children's Ministry programming.  We celebrated the many years of fun together with ice cream!  Congratulations Nicole!

Lay Looker Lay Looker, by Bob Peterson
Read Bob Peterson's column here and on our website!

"This is a story of love: Last Friday while I and my friend walked the promenade between shops and restaurants at Dana Point Yacht Harbor, we noticed a family of four walking slowly ahead of us. There was the father and mother plus a girl of about twelve and another girl about nine years of age. The 9 year old was using crutches with some difficulty while..."

80th Birthday Celebration for Ana Vaitafa
On June 2 in our 11:00 worship, we honored and prayed in celebration of Ana Vaitafa's 80th Birthday. As is Tongan tradition, this birthday anniversary was cause for extra special celebrations, including generous gifts to the church and pastor.

There's more celebration planned, too: on Sunday June 30, instead of our regular potluck, Ana's family invites us all to share in a birthday lunch for her at noon. The whole church is welcome, and we will also welcome special guests from the South Bay Christian Church.
Trustees Updates: Work Day on the 29th, Parking Lot Re-Do and More
Join our Church Trustees for a volunteer work day on our campus--on Saturday morning, June 29, from 8:30-noon. Your help will enable us to take care of many small but important maintenance projects here. Please bring work gloves, if you have them.

Our thanks to our Trustees, especially Ron Willman,  for undertaking some bigger projects, too: they've hired a crew to paint much of our exterior, along Torrance Blvd and Broadway, and to do some needed maintenance on our old windows.  In early 2013, our entire campus was tented and fumigated.  A roof repair was completed in the sanctuary and a new wall heater was installed in Epworth Lounge. A new watering system was installed throughout the grounds and the choir room was recently repainted and two new doors and blinds for all the windows were installed.

Additionally, our parking lot will be upgraded during the week of June 17-21 (Monday-Friday); the old pavement will be completely removed, the land re-graded, and resurfaced. Please note that the parking lot will be completely inaccessible during that week, though the office will remain open and the campus can be accessed through the sidewalk from Broadway. We will have Shared Bread, as usual, on Wednesday. We anticipate the parking lot will be completed and available before Sunday the 23rd.

Finally, our Trustees have approved a plan for a complete replacement of our sanctuary sound systems. We anticipate the new system will be installed toward the end of the summer, and will improve and streamline sound for music and for speaking and preaching in the sanctuary. Many thanks to Trey Kyle, who has designed the system to meet our needs, affordably.

All of these much-needed maintenance projects are made possible through the generosity of several special gifts and memorial funds. Many thanks to those whose contributions enabled this work!
Our California-Pacific Annual Conference gathers in Redlands

The California-Pacific Annual Conference of the United Methodist Church, our regional church body, meetings this week at the University of Redlands, Thursday through Saturday. Pastor Molly will attend, along with our lay members of the Conference, Kathy McCandless and Jonathan Tuuholoaki.

This is the first year that our new Bishop, Minerva Carcano will lead the Conference, where churches throughout Southern California, Hawaii, Guam and Saipan will gather for worship and to further the mission of the church. We will set our budget and program plans, ordain new clergy, retire others at the end of their active service, and discuss issues of concern to the church.

This year's theme is "How Firm a Foundation;" you can watch the worship services live, online. Please keep our church in your prayers as we meet.
