Parking Lot Repairs
Our parking lot is scheduled for some much needed TLC the week of June 17th.  We will be digging up the entire lot, regrading, filling, surfacing, and painting the entire lot.  It is a week long project, so our lot will be closed to cars through the 21st.  The office will remain open with access from the street along the pathway in front of the nursery building.

Youth Sunday  - June 9

Our youth will be leading worship in all the services--

with graduating Seniors preaching!

8:30am---Informal Worship in Epworth Lounge

9:30am---Contemporary Worship in the Sanctuary

11:00am---Traditional Worship in the Sanctuary

Liturgy is the Work of the People

"Liturgy," the word we used to describe the form of our worship, comes from a word meaning "the work of the people."

Which is one of the many reasons why I'm so excited about worship this week: our youth have collaborated together, studying scripture and talking about worship, to plan worship services that are the work of many of our thoughtful young people.

As a visual, they created special banners for the day, with colorful handprints covering them. I think they're such a beautiful sign of the spirit with which this worship will have been prepared--a literal depiction of the hands involved in this work.

Preparing for worship like this is an exercise in trust and patience for a preacher like me; usually, I don't involve quite so many people in planning any one Sunday's worship gatherings. There's a certain amount of chaos inherent in a project that has so many hands touching it.

It's also a really beautiful thing.

I'm looking forward to sharing in worship on Sunday. Five of our Seniors will share a message. All the youth have shaped a plan that creates ways for all of us in the congregation to join them in a liturgy that will declare the grace of Christ, who is at work among us in so many ways.

with gratitude,

Pastor Molly

Youth Sunday  &
 Annual Youth Banquet
THIS SUNDAY!!!!

The youth are excited to lead worship at all three service times: 8:30, 9:30 and 11:00 on June 9th.  They are busy preparing!

Following the 11:00 worship, the youth group is celebrating our Seniors at the Annual Youth Banquet.  This year, we will be honoring 6 graduates:  Reina Chacon, Brandon Connor, Christian Grantz, Emily Horowitz, Luke McCandless, and Erin South. All are welcome to join us for the banquet! Tickets are available on the patio or at the door:  Adults $12, Youth & Children $5.  As in years past, we will have a basket in the hall for each of the seniors, in case you wish to bring cards, notes, etc.
On June 2, Ice Cream Sundaes were enjoyed by many as we celebrated Children and Family Ministries and thanked Kathy Martens for her years of dedicated service. Thank you to our United Methodist Women for hosting the celebration.

A Special Gift for Kathy: Pages are due this Sunday, June 9

We are preparing a book full of memories for Kathy, at the end of her term as Director of Children's Ministries.  She's served us so lovingly and faithfully for 10 years that we think this will be a special way to show her how much we love her back.  We hope each family or church group will participate.

If you haven't been able to pick up a blank page here on Sunday morning, any 12"x12" page will work.

We want each page to be your own creation.  Some ideas include: write your own special and unique memories, include photographs or perhaps programs/artwork from special events in which your child participated, a special poem that reminds you of Kathy, a loving letter or meaningful sketches...

If you have any questions, please contact Sabrina Callender-Clewett at 310-490-6767 or [email protected]

Lay Looker Lay Looker, by Bob Peterson
Read Bob Peterson's column here and on our website!

"Those of us attending the 11:00 AM worship service last Sunday were surprised to see Rick McCandless grab the mic and begin to sing a "rockin'" song during the postlude. An even bigger surprise was when church organist Dr. Jeanette Yaryan played an accompaniment that made it more of a duet than a solo. They got a standing ovation at the conclusion. So now, the rest of the story: It seems that Rick..."

80th Birthday Celebration for Ana Vaitafa
Last Sunday in our 11:00 worship, we honored and prayed in celebration of Ana Vaitafa's 80th Birthday. As is Tongan tradition, this birthday anniversary was cause for extra special celebrations, including generous gifts to the church and pastor.

There's more celebration planned, too: on Sunday June 30, instead of our regular potluck, Ana's family invites us all to share in a birthday lunch for her at noon. The whole church is welcome, and we will also welcome special guests from the South Bay Christian Church.
We will celebrate Graduation Sunday on June 16!
Please send us information about members of your family who are graduating this year--their name (and relationship to you), school, degree (if applicable), and plans for next year (if applicable).

Then, please invite your friends and family to help us celebrate their accomplishments in worship on June 16 (Father's Day), in all our services.
